We had the good fortune of connecting with JULI and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JULI, is there something you believe many others might not?
“Stick to a real job” I seem to always hear this from people who are miserable in their own lives, and most importantly, hate their job! Whenever I hear this I think, stick to a real job so I can be as miserable as you are because you gave up on your dreams? No thank you! The biggest thing I’ve learned since pursuing music and learning about business, and entrepreneurship; only take advice from people that you admire. Beyonce would not tell me to stick to a real job right? I’ve gotten the most success from my career by only listening to those who are in the position I want to be at. Watch out for me! In a few years, I’ll be played in radios all over the world, because I chose to listen to the right advice…
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets my art apart from others is my identity that is attached to my art. Most people have no idea that I am African, but when people listen to my music, that part of my artistry shines through with Afro Beats, and vibe. I’ve been doing music since I was very young, my first song, Dear Diary came out when I was just 14. So that evolution in my music is one thing that I am extremely proud of. It wasn’t easy! People will definitely use you once they see that you are naive.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I personally adore cafes. There are so many hidden gems in Houston that I love to go to. I would take my best friend to Heritage Cafe, Agora, and Cafe Poetes. Lovely places to sit and have a cup of coffee, especially during the holidays. I know the Houston Japanese Garden is on our itinerary, a beautiful location right in Hermann Park, the heart of Houston. I don’t know how many times I’ve taken a walk around Hermann Park, seen an awesome show at the Miller Outdoor Theater, visited one of the many museums in the area, and ended my day with some delicious food at Barnaby’s Cafe. If I were to show my best friend what I love about Houston, these places are definitely where I would start.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am incredibly lucky to have the full support of my family and friends when it comes to my career. My mom has to be my biggest fan! Since 13 years old doing auditions and going to the studio, my mom has been through it all with me. She is the one person that believes in me, even when I don’t believe in myself. I definitely want to dedicate this shout-out to my mom.
