We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria, what inspires you?
I am inspired by the people that I get the opportunity to serve! The work of leadership can be challenging, and is often a thankless job. However, I have learned to listen for my “thank yous’ from the transformed lives of those I influence as opposed to expecting to hear it from their lips. If the services I provide brings transformation to the life of just one person in the audience, I know that that one transformation will lead to more transformations that I may never even hear about…..that is inspiration and ‘thank you’ enough for me to keep pushing forward!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I selected other because my life is a mixture of all of these options. I am a freelance practitioner and trainer of leadership principles, I am a public speaker and workshop facilitator, but I am also a professional in the field of education. I currently serve as the Student Success Coordinator in Academic Affairs at Sam Houston State University. I am most proud that I have found passion in both of these arena, and have not had to choose one over the other. My professional advancement has not been easy. Trying to network and advance my career as a black women working at a predominately white institution (PWI) has brought many challenges. I meet each of those challenges with equal grace and tenacity. I was firm and consistent. I showed up, but I showed up prepared. I did that consistently and after a while, my contributions could no longer be overlooked or ignored. What I want the world to know about me is that I don’t teach or train because I consider myself an expert that others need to learn from. I do this work because I am a practitioner of it, I’ve seen it work wonders in my life and in the lives of those I’ve been blessed to consult for, and because I want to see it work in the lives of everyone I come in touch with. Let’s learn and grow together, friends!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a small-town college community. Most people would say there isn’t much to do here, but I say, there is lots to do if you know where to look! Post-COVID, we would hit up some thrift stores, grab lunch at our world renown (literally…..WORLD RENOWN) BBQ spot, catch a movie (with snacks) for less than $12, and then grab dessert from the local ice cream parlor….YUP, THAT’S A THING HERE!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I agree completely that any success I obtain is because of the support, encouragement and training that I receive from those around me. My mentor, Cheryl Rice, is phenomenal at keeping me humble and grounded, while simultaneously never letting me sell myself short. Because of her guidance, I have seen much success!
