We had the good fortune of connecting with Zakk Autrey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zakk, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
One of my favorite quotes, that I consistently remind myself of, is from the legend himself, Quincy Jones: “Have humility with your creativity and grace with your success.” I love this quote because it’s a reminder of how vulnerable the creative process can be. When I first started writing songs, I felt a lot of anxiety when showing them to other people. Over time, I realized that if I wanted to achieve my goal as an artist, I had to let that go and just accept other’s feelings about my work- that’s humility. Not in the sense that it isn’t good enough, but that it IS my best effort, and that is ALWAYS good enough. Grace plays a role if that particular piece of art lands with my collaborator, or a fan… it’s important to remember that initial state of humility, and therefore express how grateful I am for feeling understood.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
New Love is a pop duo inspired musically by the greatest parts of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. If anything sets us apart, it’s our intention and dedication to writing the best song we possibly can, every. single. time. We’re currently working on over a dozen new singles that are to be released over the next calendar year, as well as a multitude of other content- it’s truly the best work of our lives thus far and I couldn’t be more elated. Speaking on whether the journey to this point of my career was easy? No way. My mother used to tell me, “Anything worth having won’t come easy.” She was right. I am the product of relentless attempts at achieving my goals… met with much failure along the way. But, as they say, repetition is the mother of skill. I’ve never given up on myself, not once. Nor do I plan to do so anytime soon. You can truly have it all… but ask yourself, how bad do you want it?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were showing someone around the city for the first time, this is what my itinerary would look like: Spend the morning at Pearland Coffee Roasters (their poppy seed muffin is to die for… also, macadamia milk latte.) Lunch at Flower Child in Uptown Park, maybe a quick stop at the Galleria after or pop over to Sig’s Lagoon or Cactus Music to pick up some vinyl. I’d spend the rest of the afternoon in Montrose checking out all the vintage shops Houston has to offer, then cap off the night by grabbing drinks at Poison Girl. Houston has so much to offer aside from my favorites… whatever you’re into, you can probably find it!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, Jordan Sweeny. There would be no New Love without the contributions from this man. His growth over the last few years is awe-inspiring, and the role he plays within our duo is absolutely invaluable. Whenever I’m stuck, in need of a spark, or just looking to push myself a little bit further- he’s right there. I’ll also take this opportunity to thank God, Bombay, Awsten Knight, Liam Gallagher, and my family.
