We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecelia Nowlin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cecelia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My entrepreneurial journey began in high school while watching “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” with my mom. Inspired by those successful business owners, I knew I wanted to start my own business. Despite being discouraged by friends and family who believed it was impossible for me, I held onto my dream.
Years later, while working as a nurse and content with a steady paycheck, a subtle nudge from God sparked the idea of starting a real estate business. Disregarding that initial feeling, I persisted with my comfortable yet uneventful routine until a pivotal moment arose when I faced the choice between attending my son’s school event or going to work. Prioritizing my family, I quit my job that day in 2008 and registered my real estate franchise at the courthouse. It was time to believe in my dream.
With no experience in the field, I faced the challenge of learning how to run a real estate business independently. Seeking guidance, I turned to several of my male real estate broker friends who owned franchises, only to be disappointed by their discouragement, citing my gender and race as obstacles to success. Rather than becoming discouraged, I used their words to ignite a fire within me.
With that fire and newfound determination, I turned my company around and became Texas’s top real estate franchise, achieving recognition from the exclusive “Real Estate Executives Magazine – Houston edition.” This led me to launch Empower Business Group, where I help women entrepreneurs start and grow successful businesses.
As a self taught real estate franchise owner and coach, I understand the importance of empowering others and overcoming obstacles. In a world that still favors men in business, I am grateful for those who doubted me, as their attempts to break me only made me stronger. Empower Business Group has aided countless women in successfully launching their own flourishing ventures, providing essential support because, as the saying goes, “If you want to go far, you go together.”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spot in Houston. It’s so many. My number one pick would be the galleria area. It’s so much you can do just within the galleria mall. You can ice skate eat and have a glass of wine while of course shopping. My favorite restaurant in the galleria? The Cheesecake Factory. Near the galleria you have downtown Houston. You have the cultural events there from ballet to opera. You can also visit the museum near the medical center. You can’t miss the art museum also. Both are so beautiful. Near the museum you will find Herman park. It’s a great place to find an outdoor event. We are really blessed to live in Houston. We can find anything that you want to do here.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
