We had the good fortune of connecting with Becky Kiser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Becky, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There was both a thought process in starting parts of my business and not a single thought at all. I’ve always been ambitious and knew there were things I had to offer, but I had put a lot on pause after having three kids in 4 years. You know how they tell you about parenting that “the days are long, but the years are short?” I feel the same about entrepreneurship–the days felt long with intentional and practical next steps paired with wild leaps of risk. While the years felt so very short, as if it all sort of just happened. Each step I’ve taken has been to help women live more fully. That’s always been the main thought and intention behind anything I step into. My journey with entrepreneurship has evolved, not just in the growth of scale and income but in the services I offer. Whatever I do, it’s always about the woman I’m helping–whether she’s a small business owner, a stay-at-home mom who’s lost her purpose, or a young single uncertain of what life might hold for her. I’ve coached, consulted, spoken at events, podcasted, and written books to help her live the most abundant life possible.
What should our readers know about your business?
I consider myself a multi-passionate person. Life & Small Business Coach: I love meeting with women one-on-one or with small businesses to help them not just meet the goals they have for themselves but surpass them. We often can’t see or even fathom our potential. I am really good at seeing what others are amazing at, helping them identify their blindspots, refine what could work better, and then helping them hit the accelerator for their lives or business!
Author: I’ve written one book, Sacred Holidays: Less Chaos, More Jesus, and my second book But God Can: How to Stop Striving and Live Purposefully and Abundantly will be released in May 2024!
Speaker: I love speaking at womens events, retreats and conferences!
Founder of Online Women’s Ministries: This ministry started during covid when I saw how women were struggling and needed some encouragement and hope! I teamed up with my brother, Nils Smith, genius with all things online, to put on a online women’s retreat and we had 10,000+ women attend! From that we started Online Women’s Bible Study, a monthly membership service that has on-demand Bible study, similar to a netflix model, but filled with the best Bible teachers of our day!
Podcast Host: I recently launched the Hearers & Doers Podcast, available anywhere you stream podcasts. On this podcast I will either have a direct to the listener conversation where I put on my coaching hat and we chat about something just us, or I interview a new or an old friend.
What sets me apart from others? My authenticity. We live in a world with a lot of pretense. My clients, readers, listeners, and followers all tell me that what they appreciate most about me is that they feel like they know me. My clients are often surprised by how direct I am. I may be sweet, but I don’t waste anyone’s time!
How’d I come to where I am? Two steps forward, one step back. A lot of trial and error. A lot of not being afraid to fail. **Note: I feel like the answers to the rest of the things have been answer in other questions…**
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I grew up in the Heights, before the Heights was cool. But now I live in The Woodlands (suburb just north of town off 45). Fun fact, The Woodlands is consistently voted as one of the top cities to live in the United States (it’s technically a township, but because if it’s size is voted as a city).
Here are a few things I’d recommend to any friends visiting me in the Woodlands:
*We’d for sure need to see if anyone fun is playing at the Cynthia Woods Pavillion (one of the top amphitheaters in the world) or if anything fun is happening in Market Street (our version of a Town Square)
*If they want to shop, The Woodlands Mall is fabulous. But we’d also hit up some of my fave local shops: Piney Rose, Tumbleweeds & Notions, and 31 Roots.
*Drinks: Hearsay (Flaming Leah or Jalapeno) on the Water Way, Sixty Vines on Market Street (The Carajillo or try more than the 60 wins on tap!), or The Audrey (Market Street Mule or Rose Water Lemon Drop) on Market Street.
*Food: I’d give them a choice from some of my favorite local spots– Republic Grille (try the chicken woodlands with jalapeno cream corn and bacon jalapeno mac n cheese), Pallotta’s Italian Grill (my fave is the Chicken Ala Pallotta), The Butler House (sit outside and get Malbec Braised Short Rib), Ploy Thai (whatever is the curry of the day is worth a try), and if you want to get fancy then head to Amerigo’s (you can’t choose wrong–everything is amazing).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are plenty of people I could give a shoutout to–no one person gets all the credit, that’s for sure! However, there is one who has lifted me up time and time again: my brother, best friend, and hero, Nils Smith (https://www.instagram.com/nilssmith/). Nils and I have always been close, and he has consistently been my biggest cheerleader. He’s advocated for me not to quit college when I was ready to throw in the towel. He’s pushed me to say yes when I was scared or leap when I didn’t think I’d land. He’s teamed up with me to put on an online retreat during Covid because I had an idea–and we ended up having 10,000+ women sign up! Nils is a genius in his field (innovation and all things online), but he is an even more remarkable brother.
