We had the good fortune of connecting with Edward Marshun Preston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Edward Marshun, what’s your definition for success?
In my latest literary offering, “Dear Artist: Everyone is Your Friend,” delve into the insightful Chapter 3 titled “Don’t Get Lost on The Journey, You Got This!” The chapter emphasizes redefining success through personally set goals rather than mere dreams. Encouraging readers to maintain stamina, inspiration, faith, and motivation, it advocates for achieving aspirations while fully awake, emphasizing the power of purpose-driven goals over passive dreaming. Explore the transformative narrative that propels individuals toward success in both the artistic and personal realms.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic journey kicked off in my early years, navigating the contrasting landscapes of Houston’s 5th Ward and the occasional foray into the suburbs as a young black kid. The rich tapestry of life in both environments fueled my creative spirit, drawing inspiration from diverse facets of existence. A particular passion for history and culture began to take root, setting the stage for the path I would tread.

Upon donning the cap and gown at James Madison High School, I set my sights on New York City, a sprawling canvas where I honed my skills as a performance artist and writer. CBS, NBC, and even Sony Records became platforms for my expression over an enriching 11-year period. However, the call of my roots in Houston beckoned, and I returned with a wealth of knowledge to impart to the next generation.

My journey, akin to a rollercoaster, wasn’t for the faint-hearted. Three near-death experiences, battles with depression, and wrestling with social anxiety punctuated the narrative. But through the crucible of therapy, unyielding faith, and sheer determination, I emerged stronger and more resilient than ever, a testament to the transformative power of the human spirit.

Now, on the cusp of graduation at Texas Southern University, my pursuit of knowledge takes center stage. A History Major with a minor in Fine Arts reflects the fusion of my love for storytelling and artistic expression. This interview isn’t just a conversation—it’s an intimate exploration of the twists, turns, and triumphs that have shaped me into the artist I am today. Join me on this inspiring voyage through a life dedicated to turning adversity into artistic brilliance.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Exploring Houston’s vibrant cultural scene is an art in itself, with my favorite spots serving as brushstrokes on the canvas of this dynamic city. The Museum of Fine Arts and the University Museum at Texas Southern beckon with their allure, while the avant-garde exhibits at CAM (Contemporary Arts Museum) spark the flames of creativity.

When the craving for culinary delights strikes, we embark on a gastronomic journey, relishing the authentic flavors of local Taquerias that encapsulate Houston’s diverse food scene. A casual evening unfolds at Dean’s on Main Street and Preston, where the historical resonance of the street, bearing my last name, intertwines with the present.

As day turns to night, the enchantment continues at Rabbit’s Got A Gun, where spirited conversations and meticulously crafted cocktails set the tone. Amidst these cultural explorations, the shopping haven of Outlaw 713 adds a dash of retail therapy, bringing a curated selection of local flair to my Houston experience.

Each locale, from museums to eateries and boutiques, becomes a chapter in the narrative of Houston’s rich culture and diversity. It’s an intimate odyssey against the backdrop of fine arts, history, flavorful cuisines, and stylish finds, making my journey through the city a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.
