We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Wood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
A lot of factors played a small part in the decision process. The most important one of all, was leaving a stressful 8 to 5 job because of the health conditions it caused. My health and state of mind were important to me and my family.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. I’m excited and proud that I’ve been able to grow as much as I have. Not just business wise but my craft as a photographer. What sets me apart from others, well being myself and have fun doing what I love. It doesn’t get better than that. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? Before I became a photographer, I was working for a dental group in Missouri City. The job was causing a lot of anxiety and stress, I got sick from it. It was a difficult decision to make because I wasn’t where I wanted to be as a photographer. My husband and I thought long and hard and we both agreed that I should take the jump and focus on photography only. I had health issues because of the stress, stress induced asthma. Since I’ve taken the jump my health has improved and my career has become everything I wanted and more. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? Don’t be scared of letting go of something that is holding you back from your dream. Also, stop being a perfectionist, no such thing as being perfect. Be less critical of yourself and your work. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? That no matter what the circumstances are, we can all live our dream one way or another. It’s about putting our desires first and watching them grow. My brand, is just a brand and as a photographer, I’m just another person living up to their dream and hopes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Places to eat: Rosalie, Restaurant Caminos de Michoacan, Fiori Houston, Good Times Cafe, McHugh Tea Visit: Galveston, Baytown Umbrella Alley, stroll around buffalo bayou, visit Lake Houston Wilderness Park
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t have excelled as much as I had within a few years, without the constant learning from Ana Brandt and a local Houston family photographer group on Facebook. I’ve enjoyed learning as much as I have and will continue to educate myself. In this field, it’s all about learning new techniques and grasping every bit of information you can to evolve.
