We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Joey Ramos, owner of CrossFit Artillery, founded his gym out of a deep passion for fitness and helping others. Unlike business owners who are driven solely by profit, Joey wanted to create a space where results and relationships were prioritized over revenue. He believes that focusing on money alone leads to failure when it comes to serving members and clients. Despite knowing he could potentially earn more by choosing another career path, Joey chose to dedicate himself to fitness & coaching because of the personal growth he witnesses in other people. What fuels him is knowing that CrossFit Artillery is the best hour of his clients’ day, a place they look forward to going to. Joey’s vision was to build a community of motivated, like-minded individuals, each focused on their own unique path to better health.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets CrossFit Artillery apart? The first thing is our coaching staff & their knowledge on the many areas of health & fitness. From nutrition to performance in the gym, they can help with it all. We have helped individuals meet their overall health & wellness goals from getting in shape for their wedding, keeping women safely active during their pregnancies, fitness newcomers looking to get into a routine, establish healthy eating habits & day to day nutrition, provide the competitive edge for those seeking it, and much much more. The second is our gym culture. We are a very family oriented and friendly gym. Our members look forward to coming here because our atmosphere is social & inviting, lifelong friendships are made here, the coaching extends well beyond class times & the walls of the gym, and so much more. We truly are the community that people often seek & never find.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am all about discovering some of the best parts of Houston. I also enjoy supporting Houston & Texas based businesses. With that said, if I had a friend visiting from out of town I would take them to grab some wing at Pluckers for lunch. From there we would head over to 8th Wonder Brewery for a couple brews. Then I would have to take them to finish up the day at a Astros game at Minute Maid Park. I’m a huge baseball fan… Go Astros!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife, Gayla Ramos. My father, Mario Ramos.
Most importantly my wife, Gayla, because she stood behind me when I wanted to take the jump from General Manager at another gym to owning my own. She pushed me to take the risk, follow my passion for the sport of CrossFit, and has had my back in running it the past 8 years as well.
My dad, Mario, has been one of the biggest support systems my entire life. From baseball as a kid through college to starting my own business, he has always been my number 1 fan.
