Meet Dj Luilly | Dj & Radio Host ” LatinoMix 97.5FM.”

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dj Luilly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dj, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, and raised in Santurce until the age of 11. My parents are originally from the Dominican Republic. Shortly after, we relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, which is where my DJ career officially began at the age of 13.
Growing up in Puerto Rico within a Dominican household, I was surrounded by a rich and diverse musical environment from morning until night. I was exposed to a vibrant mix of sounds—everything from reggaetón artists like Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, and Don Omar, to traditional Dominican bachata from Anthony Santos and Frank Reyes, along with salsa and merengue heard throughout the streets of Santurce.
After moving to New Orleans, I was introduced to yet another layer of musical culture, including jazz, bounce music, and iconic local artists like Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh. This fusion of influences deeply shaped my early days as a DJ.
What makes my musical journey so special is the ability to blend these diverse sounds seamlessly—from playing classics like Frankie Ruiz and Héctor Lavoe, to modern hits by Bad Bunny or even “Back That Azz Up”—and still create a set that resonates with everyone. It’s a unique mix, much like the perfect seasoning—like adobo—that brings everything together.
Now, with a deeper appreciation for my roots in Puerto Rico, my upbringing in New Orleans, and my Dominican heritage, I understand how these cultural influences have shaped not only my sound but also my identity as a DJ.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Deejaying is more than just a profession to me—it’s a passion that has shaped my life. I began deejaying at around 13 or 14 years old in Bridge City, Louisiana, doing small house parties and private events alongside my uncle, DJ Mustafa. He introduced me to the world of music and DJ culture when CDs were still the primary format, and I’ve been dedicated to the craft ever since.
What sets me apart is my charisma and genuine connection with people. Whether you’re the janitor or the venue owner, I’ll greet you with the same warmth and energy. My goal is always to create a memorable experience for everyone. I pride myself on my ability to read a crowd—whether it’s an all-English-speaking audience or a diverse and dynamic Hispanic crowd, I understand how to blend genres and adapt my sets to keep everyone engaged and on their feet.
Even after all these years, I still get excited—sometimes even chills—seeing a crowd jump and vibe to my music. Whether I’m playing a club or a private event, I bring the same passion, energy, and respect. What began as a hobby has grown into a meaningful career, and I truly live by the saying, “Music takes me to places I’ve never been.”
My journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced countless closed doors and been told more than once that I should pursue a traditional 9-to-5 job or go back to school, that DJing wasn’t a “real” career. I was told DJs wouldn’t make it. But over 10 years later, I’m still here—building my brand, creating opportunities, and proving that you can build a meaningful, successful career through music.
One of the most defining moments of my journey was when I made the difficult decision to leave my full-time job to pursue DJing professionally. It was scary at first, but the support of my wife, my family, and my team gave me the strength to believe in myself. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when everything shut down, we pivoted by going live on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. That exposure introduced me to new audiences, helped me grow my brand, and even opened doors in new markets—especially Houston, Texas, which has become like a second home due to the overwhelming love and support I’ve received there.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to never give up. Don’t let others define your worth or limit your potential. It doesn’t matter what career you choose—if you’re passionate and committed, anything is possible. Sometimes when it feels like everything is falling apart, that’s when things begin to fall into place. I believe that with faith, hard work, and perseverance, you can overcome anything. God works in mysterious ways—just never stop believing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend were visiting me here in New Orleans, Louisiana, I would make sure they experience the unique culture, energy, and hospitality that makes this city so special. We’d start the day in the iconic French Quarter, exploring its historic architecture and vibrant street life. For breakfast, we’d head to Magazine Street, known for its charming cafes and local eateries.
From there, we’d return to Bourbon Street—the heart of New Orleans nightlife, often compared to Las Vegas for its lively party scene. It’s truly a street that never sleeps, filled with music, dancing, and unforgettable energy.
For lunch, we’d take a short drive to Slidell and dine at Dos Almas, a fantastic local restaurant located at the corner of Cousins Street and Sargent Alfred.
When it comes to nightlife, we’d explore some of the area’s best weekly events. On Taco Tuesday, we’d visit Chilangos Seafood in Kenner for great food and a lively atmosphere. Wednesdays would be all about karaoke, and on Thursdays, we’d grab a meal at the local favorite, Port of Call.
As the weekend rolls in—Friday through Sunday—we’d return to Bourbon Street for signature New Orleans drinks like a Hand Grenade or a Fishbowl, and then cap off the night at the club where I would be DJing. There, I’d make sure they have an unforgettable experience, surrounded by great music, great people, and the incredible energy that defines this city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This Shoutout is for all aspiring entrepreneurs embarking on their journey, regardless of the path they choose. Never give up on your dreams. Success requires consistent hard work, resilience, and determination. If one door closes, find another—or create your own opportunity.
When you achieve your goals, continue to work even harder to sustain and grow them. Set new, meaningful objectives that align with your vision. Life can be challenging, but no matter how difficult things get, remember—there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
My journey has been shaped by closed doors and obstacles, but I’ve learned to build my own path when one wasn’t available. When something didn’t work out, I kept pushing until it did.
Don’t let rejection define you. Surround yourself with positive, open-minded people. Keep your circle strong, stay focused, and allow yourself to dream bigger every day. As long as you’re alive, you have the power to start over, to grow, and to make an impact. And above all—stay grateful.
