We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Davi5 and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
The hardest decision that I’ve made in life has to do with believing in myself, being okay with becoming great while trying to be humble and getting over my fear of success. I enjoy doing for others and seeing the fruits of that labor yet I have not nurtured myself in the past.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
“People will tell you 97% of their truth. But the 3% unspoken holds power in their lives.” It took me about 39 years to walk fully in my life purpose. Growing up, I played basketball and excelled without giving a hundred percent. I lived a decent life without any law problems and was well respected back home in Kansas City, KS. I made good money and helped within my community – so life should have been grand. Yet the hardest thing to overcome was admitting that I had childhood traumas and trigger that had me fearing success. It became my biggest fear. Some of the traumas that effected me most include feeling detached from my loved ones, being abused as a child, hiding this from my mother and shrinking my voice to keep things drama-free for everyone else… Everyone but myself. Then going through my season of losing which included losing my play brother Moochie at 17, followed by my beloved Grandmother Eva Mae Wilson, and making the hard decision to leave college after my first semester. At that point I experienced my first bout with depression and anxiety – issues that in those times were not popular to discuss in the African-American family and community. The comeback was learning from my mistakes and discovering my voice. Learning to accept love, and not self sabotage. Going to see a therapist and listening to the right people. Living in Houston 10 years now on February 2nd after taking a big leap of faith. Finding the correct church that has held me accountable and helped groom me in my walk with the Lord. I would love for people to know that my show is actually not about me but rather is a platform for those without a voice to shine. By valuing their messages, products, character and vision, I’m able to use my grass roots podcast to give the world balance and opportunities through my show to reach and inspire those who are on their way up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday night would be a happy hour day at Brio Tuscany Grille – City Centre. Tuesday would be Taco Tuesday at The Spot Sports Grill and Bar. Buy one, get one free delicious tacos are featured including Mexican, Caribbean and Street style tacos. The atmosphere is a fun and relaxing place including a great D.J and different contest each week. Wednesday is midweek so while trying to adjust to the “new norm” I’d suggest a good workout or walking to find some inspiration while people watching – especially at The Galleria. Thursday go check out The Deck for food watch any sporting events that might be on. Friday I’d suggest going to Sweet Lips Cigar Bar for a nice cigar and cognac. Saturday is steak day at The Hideaway restaurant. Sunday is time to relax and rest. I love food and art.   The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Hmmm… First and foremost my faith in God, and my community while growing up in Kansas City, Kansas ” Wyandotte County”. My family and extended Houston family “CRU” have also been key supporters. D.J.
