We had the good fortune of connecting with Symphony Webb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Symphony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business, I knew I wanted it to be something that would make an impact on people’s lives, so I thought that it would be a great idea to combine my love for fashion and my communications skills into one. Sometimes the simplest thing can make the biggest statement and change a situation or your thought process.
What should our readers know about your business?
Urban Culture Apparel is Apparel with a Statement. I started this brand in 2017, a year after I graduated from college. Urban Culture Apparel uses expressive, thought-provoking, and comedic quotes, messages, and urban terminology to create statement pieces such as t-shirts, hats, bags, etc. I’m known for being outspoken and speaking my mind; as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that sometimes it’s better to be quiet. With that said, I wanted a way to communicate with people without having to speak at all. A way; that would encourage, inspire, and uplift others, evoke change, start conversations and make people laugh. So I thought, what better way to connect with people than putting my thoughts and quotes on a t-shirt! Most of the statements started as affirmations to myself and a way to express my feelings while dealing with post-graduate depression. I knew I wanted to start a business; I just didn’t what to do or how to do it. I wrote my thoughts in a notebook daily, and one day it hit me like a ton of bricks; I was going to turn my frustrations and affirmations into a business; thus, Urban Culture Apparel was born. Since my business is online and I don’t get to interact with my customers in person, I like to create a memorable shopping experience for them by making sure that orders are shipped as soon as possible, all items are securely packaged, and thank you notes go inside of each package; no matter how many times someone orders from my brand. I want them to know that I appreciate them. Soon I’ll start including gifts in every order. Having good customer service is my top priority. When I’ve shopped with other brands and received my orders, I can tell that no thought or care went into my order and, I was just another transaction. I never want my customers to feel like they are an after-thought when they’re shopping with Urban Culture Apparel. That’s what sets my business apart from others. I’m excited to see my business grow and become bigger than I ever imagined it would be and, I’m even more proud of myself for making it this far. With all of the things that have taken place in my life, I didn’t think that I would make it to year one let alone year three! So for that, I’m grateful. Although it’s not easy and sometimes business is super slow, I just remember why I started and how far I’ve come; that’s what keeps me going. I’ve learned that planning produces better results within my business and, it helps to take away unnecessary stress. Allowing people to see my business growth is also important. Often, we think everything in business is perfect or should be perfect, but in all actuality, it’s not. It’s ok to let people see your growth process and let them in on your journey. I believe that my truth and authenticity will help others who are thinking about starting a business.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends and I prefer more low key spots in the city more than the typical Houston night life. I would say the Greasy Spoon Soulfood Bistro for good food, shopping Black Market Houston, maybe live entertainment at the local seat and hookah with Big Smoke Hookah for taco Tuesday.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to God, because without him I wouldn’t have the vision or courage to step out on faith everyday and create dope statements pieces that people love. Also, to each and every statement maker that supports Urban Culture Apparel; thank you from the bottom of my heart!
