We had the good fortune of connecting with Liyah Iman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liyah, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I first started making music, I would go so hard. I would finish 4 songs in a day and want to perform them that same day. When I had my first creative burnout and couldn’t work daily on what I loved I realized that in order to have longevity in this business you have to find a balance. To be a creative and make money from it you have to have a balance of work, play, and experience. Work; meaning that you have put in action to get to the next step. Play; meaning without relaxation and fun your passion might just turn into a job you hate. Experience; meaning the more you see, the more you can share, and the more you can share, it makes it easier to create! At first I was all work and experience. Now that i have incorporated some play into my balance I think I’ve found the perfect rhythm. I was able to produce an entire album and write all the lyrics for it as well; and guess what?! I DIDN’T BURN OUT! I thinking finding balance is truly the key to mastering life on earth!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What truly sets me apart is my approach. I’m not trying to make a “typical” hit song. I want my songs to hit you, but in the heart and mind and open you up to a more vulnerable version of yourself. I want my lyrics to help you use whatever tools you were given to create whatever dreams you have for yourself. I know this is what sets me apart because of the pride I have for all the new music I have created using this same attitude. When you hear Photosynthesis for the 1st time you will love it because it is good music. Hopefully the second time you listen you hear how one person, created everything you’re listening to with what she had. The journey wasn’t fast or easy, but to come out on the other side accomplishing this goal by myself has been so rewarding. From having this attitude I have learned that everyday, if you just put in a little work you might come out with a a masterpiece. You get more professional everyday you work on your craft! There is a confidence that comes from knowing the answers to your questions and others when they are asked. There is a joy that comes from bringing something to life. Not only humans can be brought to life. Liyah Iman Inc. has learned that everyone has something that needs to be birthed into this world. We were created to create more! That’s why this creative life is so rewarding for me. I see just how much love and attention goes into these beautiful things we consume and often times throw away when we’re done using it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was going to take my best friend around Houston I would take them on an all day trip to every city location around this town. You can start in Third Ward and go to Soul Food Vegan, where you will find some of the best soul food in town! Might even stop by Emancipation Park while I’m there! Then you have to go to the Houston Mural Park, take some pictures, then rent a scooter! Then we have to take our scooters around the downtown area to check out all the high rise buildings. Downtown Houston is so intriguing. Don’t forget to go by George R. Brown Convention Center! Now once you return your rental you can either chose to go to Fat Bao or The Turkey Leg Hut. Eat a lovely smoked turkey leg or get some Fat Fries, then you head over to the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center to walk some of that great food off and take in nature’s beauty! If we still want to do some walking we can head to Memorial Mall. I swear that mall is huge! Did someone say Carrabba’s for dinner? Or did you want to stop by I-Fly first to make sure you don’t get sick in a skydive simulation? You could even go to Houston Escape room if you’re afraid of heights. Now if we are still out past 12 am I might just end my night at House of Pies! Their hot cocoa is the best in town! So much to do in Houston! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this post to Tay Sandle. She is the true definition of a balanced individual. She helps me strive to make better decisions everyday and I truly could not have made it to this balanced place without her! Thank you so much!
