Meet Glady Dalton | Brand & Business Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Glady Dalton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Glady, how do you think about risk?
To take a risk is to expose yourself. Possibly exposing your weaknesses, but it can also expose your strengths. I’ll give it to you straight, I quit my full time job and took all my money to travel around Europe for 30 days. I came back broke and determined to make my side hustle photography business my full time job. That was in 2016. Taking a risk like that isn’t something I’d recommend. However, if I didn’t do that I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now. That applies to both my life and my career as a brand and business photographer. A risk like that showed me it was possible to travel. Possible to try new things. Possible to fail and still succeed. Possible to change course. Up until then, I had done all the “right things”. I did everything I was supposed to, I followed the logical path and I dreaded where that got me. I was so confused as to when I was supposed to feel happy about any of it. I would daydream about doing something just because I wanted to do it and not because it was the right next step. So I asked myself what would it be like if I let my heart take the wheel? What would happen? I gave it one day to make decisions and it booked a 30 day trip to Europe. Of course, that’s not the only risk I took in my life/business. But it’s the risk that catapulted all the rest.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a brand & business photographer. That’s not how it started though. In the beginning I was pursuing glamour photography. I followed in a mentors footsteps until one of my clients came to me for glamour photos for their business. We spent 4x longer together than a traditional photoshoot because I simply couldn’t get enough. When they left the session. I remember shutting the door thinking that I needed more of that in my life. So from there I made the pivot towards specializing in brand & business photography. The both hard and easy part was saying no to other work. Hard at first to turn down opportunities, but the more I said no to things that weren’t ‘brand & business’ the more it became clear to myself and everyone around me what it is I do and who I do it for. It took about a year for me to fully separate myself from all other photography work and establish myself as solely a brand & business photographer. But that separation was key for me. The hardest part about it was my stubbornness to know it all. I had to let go of not knowing how to do all types of photography.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Southern Utah and we’re surrounded by red mountains and pink sand. It’s a must to go for a hike and get some red dirt on your feet. Zion National Park is close by and if you haven’t been, we’re too close not to at least go for a quick hike or drive. We also have gorgeous state parks like Sand Hollow or Snow Canyon. We would end one of our days at the Joshua Trees for a killer photoshoot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people to thank for where I am today. First, a book that changed my life is The No-Bullshit Guide to Depression by Steven Skoczen. Next, there’s a small group of business owners I met in a Facebook group several years ago that have become family to me, they all know who they are. Also a huge shoutout goes to Erin Sanchez. I’m incredibly grateful that Instagram connected us and we became friends.
