Meet Jessica Luis | Hairstylist & Owner of The Blowout Babe

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Luis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what role has risk played in your life or career?
With much thought, I weigh my options by making a list and I question everything. I’m not a risk taker by any means & I do well by planning and calculating. At the age of 30, I can honestly say that i have already taken the biggest risk of a lifetime. Mid-February I was let go from my place of employment. A week later, I opened a salon in the uncertain times of a pandemic. Being a business owner is not an easy path, it’s definitely risky. But the reward is far greater than you could ever imagine. I was presented a negative situation that I turned into a positive opportunity. I’m a firm believer in that when the universe speaks, you need to quiet your mind & listen.

Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
It’s been said that a cosmetology license is just the beginning of your journey. Very early on in my career I could not imagine doing it all. Part of me wanted to specialize in something but I didn’t know what. I experimented with everything from dying hair to waxing & facials. To be honest, at first when came across my specialty I felt less than the hairdressers around me. Mostly because there wasn’t many in my industry that went in the direction I was choosing to go. Finally after 2 years I found my passion. I narrowed down my craft to exceptional styling, precision cuts & blowouts that promote healthy hair growth. Being meticulous & attentive to detail has really helped me soar in my career & being passionate about my mission has kept my heart in love with what I do. My message is clear, I want to show women how easy it is to have healthy hair. That they too can have the hair of their dreams & feel confident when they walk into a room. Becoming who I am today was not easy, I’ve hit some bumps in the road & had to change a few tires. But I’m not one to give up easily, I welcome a challenge. Growing up my parents would always encourage me to not quit, to not give up and to know when to walk away. Always stand up for yourself and hard work will always pay off in the end. I have kept this message in my daily values with my career and personal life. I’m so proud of myself, and I don’t mean that in a grandiose way. I didn’t just throw in the towel & quit when things didn’t go according to plan. I want to share that outlook with everyone I come across, to believe in themselves & to keep going when things get tough. It builds incredible character & you will always surprise yourself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For the best time? Thats a tough one, Houston is so diverse & choosing feels so wrong! But if I had to, I’d choose the Museum District. Tons of history & interesting events to attend. I’m simple when it comes to food! As long as the fries are 10/10 I’m happy! Around the museum district is two restaurants I would go to. Barnaby’s (killer fries), dog friendly patio & mimosas. Need I say more? Second up, El Tiempo Cantina. The quesadillas are drool worthy & you will always use up the sour cream. The chips & salsa disappear in the blink of an eye and margaritas that hit the spot everytime! Being in the Museum District or Montrose area is a good time, everytime. People from all walks of life & if you are out brunchin’ you’re bound to make a new friend somewhere.
