We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlene Jean-Pierre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlene, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I collect quotes so I have so many I could choose from right now! However, one that sticks out in my mind the most is, “the two most important people you will need to know is God and you. You can’t know the latter without first knowing the former.” I heard the first part of this quote from a pastor years ago and added the second part. This quote has rung so true in my life. It’s what has shaped my life for many years and what has led me toward my purpose and life mission of walking alongside women helping them to become the women of God they were created to be and to do the things they’ve been called to do. For so many years, I didn’t believe I had a purpose. My identity was shaped by culture, my family background, and who others told me I was or was expected to be. When I found myself in a deep depression over 10 years ago, it was here that I truly began to understand and embrace this quote. The more I got to know the Lord– the One who created me with purpose, for purpose and on purpose–the more I got to know who I really was in Him. It has made all the difference and is a governing principle in my life, which has led to greater peace, more freedom, and joy overflowing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

By profession, I have been a registered nurse for the last almost 18 years this coming July 2021. For the last 8 years, I have been working in chronic case management for an insurance company. I have been blessed to work in a variety of settings, with ages ranging from 5-100+. My first two years I worked in the hospital setting in surgical oncology, gynecology and urogynecology. I transitioned into community/public health and worked in an STD and family planning clinic for several years, with my last two as an adult health supervisor. I have also worked with the Medicaid population doing maternity case coordination, field case management, breast and cervical cancer case management, as well as one year of school nursing. School nursing was by far the toughest year of my career to date and yet, it was the most humbling and purposeful. It was during this difficult season that another part of my purpose unfolded. I was compelled to finally launch a mentoring and coaching program for young girls and get started on writing my first book, P.R.A.Y.: Pursue Righteousness And Yield, which was published in 2018. During this time, I took a break from nursing for about a year to finish graduate school. It was then that I discovered life coaching, and because it had been so personally transformational in my own life, I decided to become credentialed in 2012 as Professional Life and Leadership Coach and then in 2017, as an Intelligent Behavior Coach.
As a coach, I am able to take my experience and assessment skills as a nurse, coupled with my education in Human Services Counseling and Practical Theology to serve the whole person–spirit, body and soul. Although I coach women in 3 main areas: Faith, Purpose and Relationships, I recognize each one impacts the others. As we navigate through each area, I am also able to address how those areas are affecting other areas in a person’s life. People want to be seen, encouraged, valued and supported in the purpose for which they were created.
It has truly been God’s grace that has carried me through the many challenges I have faced in my career and personally. Through much prayer, the support of loved ones, a strong, healthy church and community as well as my faith in Christ, I have been able to overcome and have learned many lessons along the way. The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my nursing career and entrepreneurial journey is not to despise the process, but to desire it. There are so many things we learn through the process as well as through our failures and challenges. One of the biggest things we learn more about is ourselves, which contributes to our growth, and helps us to show up as the best person we can be for those we are called to serve. A lot of times we want to circumvent this process, but the tools we receive throughout the process provide the building blocks that help us to move forward. The one thing I want others to know is that no matter what you have gone through, no matter where you come from, no matter what you have done, no matter how old or young you are, and no matter what your story may be, know that you have a purpose and God has great plans for you. Every day you wake up is an opportunity to pursue the One who created you so that you can uncover and then walk in your God-given identity and the purpose He has called you to. There is nothing more fulfilling than doing the things you have been created and called to do. I am just so honored that as a life coach, I get to partner with the Lord and so many women who are on this purposeFULL journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I still feel like I am fairly new to the city of Houston, even though I have been here almost 4 years. I would take them to the Waterwall Park, which is near the Galleria area, so they could take some beautiful pics. We would definitely go to grab brunch at Another Broken Egg Cafe near Vintage Park and maybe take a drive to the Kemah Boardwalk, to walk around the waterfront, do a little shopping and grab some yummy seafood. I would show them around downtown Houston and take them to Discovery Green, and the Museum of Fine Arts. We would try to catch a play at the Ensemble Theatre and watch some live music at the Marriott Marquis Hotel downtown that has the Texas shaped swimming pool. I would definitely take them to the Houston Arboretum so we could get some exercise in. We would probably also take a day trip to San Antonio riverfront, catch a boat ride to learn about the history of the city, visit the Japanese Tea Garden and then eat at Nonna Osteria, a delicious Italian restaurant in San Antonio. I would also take them to City Centre in Houston on a Sunday evening to listen to some more live music and then close it out with a delicious dinner at Eddie V’s.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many that I could think of along my journey that have been so encouraging, supportive, loving, and gracious. In this season in my life and entrepreneurial journey, I would like to shout out the Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur (KDE) community/movement, which has been instrumental in helping to shift my mindset to a Kingdom focus. They have encouraged me to keep getting to know God more through an intimate relationship with Him. They have challenged me to really evaluate my priorities, values and pursuits to make sure they are in line with the Lord and His Kingdom. I have met some amazing men and women and am building relationships with other entrepreneurs who love Jesus and who are truly making a generational and Kingdom impact in the marketplace. Lastly, this community has helped me to shift from a grind and hustle mentality to operating in the grace of God, and it has truly been a game changer for me! I finally feel like I fit in and am a part of a community that “gets” me. This is so important for me as I am realizing every day how important it is to be in a healthy, supportive community as an entrepreneur.
