We had the good fortune of connecting with Renee Tatum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my own business my thought process was that this is never going to work. When I first graduated from cosmetology school I was a single 20 year old mother just trying to make some money to keep my child in daycare and food on the table. I lost interest in doing hair for a couple of years and jumped into different careers that I was not happy with. It wasn’t until I met my husband that he put a flame back under my feet to get back to doing what I knew I truly loved and what he knew I was genuinely good at. That’s when he took the steps to surprise me one year with my DBA, opening my business accounts and actually starting me on my way to not just saying I have a business but showing I do.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artistic and creative ways are through hair. I’ am a hairstylist based in houston, Tx. I’m proud of all the thing I have been able to accomplish this far as a hairstylist with also being a wife and mother of 4. I am where I am today in my career because growing up I was always drawing and loved colors. I felt like an outcast most of the time because I liked the weird artistic things that others didn’t. My outlet of escaping the world was art. I could put things together in my head when it came to drawing a picture, putting a puzzle together, even creating a hairstyle in my that I noticed my other peers couldn’t visually do. That’s when I knew I’m an artist and creating is what I need to do to express myself, my feelings and let go of any stress or loneliness I may have had. It was not easy getting to this point because of fear. Fear that I would be looked at a certain way if I told my parents at that time that I’d rather go to cosmetology school rather than play sports or get a proper scholarship for a corporate career. I was always a rebel in a way so as I got older I started doing my own thing no matter what anyone had to say. So when my parents knew that I wasn’t happy in regular college classes they finally asked what it was that I wanted to do. That’s when I enrolled myself in cosmetology school.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is a great place to eat. I’m a foodie so if I had friends visiting I would have to take them to my first love, TACOS! My favorite type of tacos is Birria Tacos. I love to get mine from a food truck called blk mkt birria. Another spot I love is Esther’s Cajun Cafe. I actually had my wedding reception here because I love the food so much lol.
A few others that I would take them to enjoy some good food and drinks would be Camp Houston, Lotus Seafood, and The Waffle Bus just to name a few. I have a whole list of eating places in houston that consist of like 100 restaurants

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband KP Tatum who is my biggest supporter has helped and support me even when I felt I couldn’t for myself. Also my parents and siblings who has been here to support me and keep me busy with clients which were my 5 nieces when I had no one else coming to me.
