We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Luviano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up seeing my dad start his own business, and I always admired that. I found my own passion and always knew I wanted to be my own boss. I decided to attend culinary school, and had jobs relating my career to gain experience. Therefore I was at a point in my life where I could actually pursue my passion, and make it a business for myself. I knew it was going to have its ups and downs, that sometimes its going to be difficult, but I refuse to let that keep me from pursuing my dream. Although im not where I want to be yet, I know these things take time, and if i don’t give up I will get where i want to be.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Starting a business is not easy. Im a home baker, and really trying to move to a store front but it was its challenges. What im most proud of is being able to leave a 9-5 job without any security that my small business will work out for me. Its a very scary decision but its gotten me a long away. I am able to focus on promoting myself better now, and get a lot more practice to expand my knowledge and skills. I am only hoping to get better, and be able to open a store front one day. Something i learned that i have to remind myself of every day is that you need to know your worth, although some people might not be willing to accept your prices or tell you you’re too expensive “its just a cake”, know that everything you do takes your time and experience to get it done and you shouldn’t set yourself short. And remember you always learn as you, don’t expect to be perfect from the start.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week ling trip, definitely will go to the museums, there’s always great exhibits to see. To eat will be great hole in the wall places such as big bens, or burger house, along with food trucks. Hanging out and drinking, truck yard will be in the itinerary. For something more old school, we could catch a movie at show boat. Or visit Houston parks to be more outdoorsy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, of course, they have supported me from the very beginning. Especially my mom and dad. All of this started because I wanted to be just like my father but both my mom and dad have fully supported me in all I do. They’re the reason why I could leave my 9 to 5 job without hesitation also when I need advice they’re there for me and help me look at the big picture. My siblings they’re my biggest fans, I always get the boosts I didn’t know I needed from them. Along with my boyfriend, I have his full support and when I get overwhelmed and stressed he’s there to pick me up.
