We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ken, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My love and passion for Comedy led me to the stage. As I began to perform, I saw the limitless opportunities to bring my gift to the masses. The first order was to identify a path to produce live comedy shows. The idea was to bring my unique perspective and affinity for both comedy and music. The first venue that I secured came after a stellar performance in which the owner believed in my gift. Afterward, a lucrative offer was presented. This was in 2020 right before the pandemic. We made the necessary and safe adjustments which led to 10 successful monthly shows which showcased the best in Houston comedy.

During this time, World of Comedy 5 Entertainment added Television Show production to our portfolio, In July 2020, World of Comedy 5 Entertainment signed an exclusive agreement to produce World Views with Ken Mills. World Views with Ken Mills was a Television Talk Show geared toward the advancement of the community at large and tackling issues from within. This show ran for two seasons (16 shows each season). In addition, World of Comedy 5 Entertainment began a new TV talk show Unbiased with Ken Mills which is headed into its newest season on March 10, 2022.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The toughest thing about Comedy is that it is a one man sport. It is literally you facing the audience that you are seeking to entertain. To be success in this pursuit, you must have these things, Self Awareness, Confidence, Mental Toughness and above all MATERIAL. When I first started, it was extremely arduous being that I was faced with the obvious question: Am I FUNNY? By repetition and hard work, this question became less relevant. We can confidently say FUNNY and HILARIOUS are two things associated with World of Comedy 5 Entertainment.

We started with live monthly shows but have continued to build an online, streaming and terrestrial presence with our TV offerings. The sky is the limit. Going forward, we will be looking for ways to add to our growing portfolio while increasing its quality and consistency.

The most pressing concern was longevity. While going through this journey which began in early 2019, I personally was in the worst shape health wise. In late 2019, I was misdiagnosed with cancer and looked to solve this problem. With divine intervention, it was identified that my long running battle with Diabetes and Blood Pressure warped hematology tests and were the root cause. In May 2020, I underwent bariatric surgery (gastric bypass) with the hope of a more healthier lifestyle. Since then, my weight has decreased from 350 to 200 pounds. I am no longer diabetic and my hypertension is under control.

As of now, we are reaping the benefits of the healthy lifestyle, experiencing more energy and less worry. We are in it for the long haul. After my 1st professional show, the headliner (Derrick Ellis) told me a quote that still rings true to this day, “Comedy Life is a marathon”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If anyone comes to Houston, our beloved H-Town, there are a few places that I will take them first.

1. Bodega Mondays at Bar 8 (Pearland) – This venue has one of the best showcases in the country every Monday night and a great and dynamic host, Ray Etc. Anyone who loves comedy will go there and the best is always on display.
2. Speakeasy Comedy Lounge at Phil and Derek’s (Midtown) – This venue hosts comedy on every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with some of the best comedians in the country performing. Hosted by All D. Freeman (Houston’s Veteran/OG Comedian) and Managed by Cliff Too and Mrs. PT2 The B.A,W.S Lady, you will be welcomed to a marvelous experience. I have performed there and it is a magical place.
3. The only non-comedy choice in the list – A’Bouzy (River Oaks) – On Saturdays, this is a great place for brunch and is very exclusive. Reservations must be made to dine and valet is complimentary. This is a great place to unwind and have candid conversations.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I would like to recognize my mother as an integral part of my journey. Throughout the years, she has been instrumental in supporting and guiding me to my passion. She said “Son, you belong on TV”! Through my hard work, this wish is coming true.

Secondly, I would like to thank my business mentor, Strode Churchwell, for all of his wisdom and insight into making my business into a powerhouse. He is the venue owner that took the chance to make the World of Comedy 5 Entertainment vision come to fruition.

Lastly, I would like to graciously thank Chimere Bacon (BossUp Houston Network CEO and Owner) for the continued support, patience and partnership with bringing World Views and Unbiased talk shows to life.
