We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Sipe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leah, why did you pursue a creative career?
Actually, I didn’t. I chose to pursue a career in law enforcement – which I love. I’m a full time Deputy in Harris County.

I started to realize how much I missed being creative and decided to pickup where I left off seven years ago before I went to the police academy, and started photographing animals again.

It’s now my “side gig” along with being a full time deputy. I can certainly say that I don’t know any other police officers who are also dog photographers haha.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The style of dog/pet photography that I enjoy is a little different than “everyone else’s”

I really enjoy taking bright,bold, and colorful photographs using flash. I also enjoy using natural light but there’s something very unique about flash photography.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is a thriving city with a long list of things to do and see. I’d have to say one of the things I’ve enjoyed most here would be the Houston Rodeo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would certainly say that my passion for photographing dog’s is definitely encouraged by my animal rescuer family & friends. As many of you know, Houston has a serious problem when it comes to animal neglect, cruelty, and homelessness. I’ve become friends with so many wonderful, selfless (and slightly crazy) people involved in animal rescue here in Houston.
