We had the good fortune of connecting with Juanell Core and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juanell, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Since 18, I’ve worked my way through the corporate world for over 15 years holding roles as a Boss, Supervisor or Manager. Once my company decided to close its doors I was suddenly laid off and faced with the choice of looking for a new company or going into work for myself. From a young age I felt that I never wanted to work a normal 9-5 job so I felt this was the perfect opportunity to take a chance in the entrepreneurial world. In each of my positions at the large corporations I’ve been able to incorporate my creativity into the role. For instance, I’ve been a Visual Display Specialist doing window designs for the GAP, a Sneaker Store Manager arranging product layouts and store displays, a Production Set Designer, and an On-location Traveling Photographer.
All of my years working in these unique environments has given me the experience and tools to succeed in running a productive business that’s unique to myself. Being a creative is hard work but also so rewarding. I thoroughly enjoy using my hands, interacting with people and coordinating to design and create memorable works of art, so my passion for Photography made the smartest choice.
The last corporate position I held, was working as a Portrait Studio Manager and when the company went under, all my regular customers were very upset and disappointed that we were closing but that didn’t stop them from asking me to continue to be their Go to Photographer and keep taken their children’s photos. I happily agreed and here I am fully committed 11 years later creating beautiful work on my own terms as a Boss. This is how J.Core Photography was created.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The great thing about Photography is it’s what you want your audience to see; through the angle, composition, depth of field and mood you are trying to portray, a photo can be almost anything you want it to be. A slight change in settings, camera tilt, crop or zoom and you have an actual piece of Art. That’s why having a true eye for that perfect photo is really what it’s all about.]
I am a Portrait and Editorial Photographer specializing in Preschool, Sports and Corporate photos. What sets me apart from other photographers in the industry is that I strived to showcase my clients true personality in every photo, waiting for that perfect expression or that glimpse in their eye and making sure they feel comfortable; like they are hanging out with an old friend; That’s my secret. A great photo is more than a cute smile, it’s the whole package; pose, expression, and background. I pull it all together.
Now one of my favorite groups to photograph are preschoolers because they are unapologetically themselves with no regrets or worries. I photograph them just as they are and their parents love me because of it. They can see it’s my passion by the unique, fun and beautiful images I capture of your children of how they are right now and in turn they get to cherish those memories for years to come.
My corporate customers get to showcase personable and relatable photos that allow them to be transparent with their current and potential new clients. I’ve also photographed numerous Sports teams, Bands and Cheer Squads in my career, but my all time favorite group I’ve photographed for the last 3 years is the Seven Lakes Spartan Marching Band here in Katy. I have been so fulfilled with spending so much time with these talented musicians and the photos I’ve created for the program have been some of my best work. The gratitude I’ve received from the kids and the parents and all the amazing memories my team and I have been able to capture for all of them, makes me absolutely love what I do.
Another great thing I do is I physically come to my clients homes or place of business for their convenience with my traveling portrait studio. I feel like this helps them feel more relaxed and comfortable since they are in their own homes and spaces; hence better photos.] It took me many years to feel and be confident in my abilities and my portfolio but I know now that my work speaks for itself along with a great referral reputation, is why I continue to thrive in this field. It has not been easy to launch and adapt this business but I wouldn’t change anything I’ve experienced on this journey. I feel like every obstacle and hurdle I’ve had to overcome and worked through has shaped and molded me into this fun loving, savvy and reliable photographer you see today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston and Katy are well known for great places to eat and fun entertainment but My first choice is always to have a get together at the house and invite all my friends over because I love hosting. When I do go out I love Rouxpour, Taste Bar + Kitchen, Dish Society, Twisted Grilled Cheese, Acme and The Tasting Room. For entertainment purposes I tend to hangout at Prospect, Katy Vibes, Xhale, Bar Louie, Centre City, take a quick trip down to South Padre Island or the lazy river in Typhoon Texas.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My recognition goes out to My husband and kids. Over the years they have watched me shoot, edit, work, create and build this business from the ground up. I’ve had ups and downs, big wins, publications, Travel, unlimited creativity and made mistakes along the way, but although I had a lot of trial and errors I feel proud to make my mark on this industry. I thoroughly enjoy doing something I passionately love and it’s even better when I can do it with the people I love! My daughters and Husband have assisted on shoots in so many roles by placing orders, dressing up in costumes, photoshoot set-up, gluing, cutting, packaging and placing orders whenever I needed their help and occasionally helping to get a smile or two. Within my business I’ve had some long hours and late nights to meet deadlines and my family has been so patient and helpful. I am forever grateful.
