We had the good fortune of connecting with Selina Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Growing up, I really struggled with food. I knew I had bad habits but didn’t know how to correct them. I made every mistake I could while trying to figure out my own nutritional needs. Once I finally figured it out, I began to take my health seriously and took on a whole new fitness routine. At the time, I was a high school teacher and saw students making all the same mistakes I had made. I knew they didn’t understand nutrition, the same way I hadn’t. I also saw other members of the community falling to preventable diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. It became clear to me that I really wanted to help people avoid all the same mistakes I had made. I decided to go back to school for a master’s degree in human nutrition so that I could help people learn how to care for themselves and their loved ones.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the founder and head nutritionist of Cualli Nutrition. Cualli is the Nahuatl word for good or something good. Which is how I approach each client. Food is so personal and to many of us, it has a cultural significance in our lives. I want everyone to live their healthiest life, enjoy what they are eating, and learn how to do this effortlessly. Which is why I take my time getting to know each person I work with and provide individualized attention. I really love to hear how clients become comfortable with eating foods they enjoy rather than feeling as though they need to eat steamed broccoli and baked chicken all the time. I believe my background in research and education has really shaped how I approach each person. I use science-based information to determine what’s best for each person. And through working in education, I have learned how to guide each person in a way that is best suited to them. It has been a long journey for myself, and now I want to help make this journey easier for others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a true gym junkie and mat rat. If I am not working, I am in the gym lifting or I am at the academy training Jiu jitsu. If someone is visiting me, we are definitely going to spend time on the mats training and get some good workouts in together. I love taking people to Azteca Farmers Market. It’s such a cool place. There’s always great food and neat things to buy. It reminds me a bit of the downtown area in hometown, Laredo. I do love a good night out though. I’d love to take them to midtown and experience the Houston nightlife. Of course, if the weather is right, a day trip to Galveston is a must. I love a good day on the beach taking in the sun and enjoying some company.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family raised me to be very independent. I always knew if there was something I wanted, I had to make it happen for myself. It was very much a “ponte las pilas” mentality. But at the same time, I always felt supported in everything I have done. I hope they know the strength I have, comes from them.
