We had the good fortune of connecting with We R Prosprus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi We R, how do you think about risk?
These days, there’s not much risk, as I have found myself with nothing to lose, due to Faith that the risks I have taken in the past has provided, but it was no easy feat. It took and still takes a great deal of detachment from the definition of success that I was taught vs. my own, which is where the difficulty lies, because that transition is brutal, for it is One that required isolation until I could properly display and communicate the beauty of this newfound perspective of success. One that grants a Life of a true freedom, where I can utilize time to learn and enhance the gift that I have been given to create, simply to provide the tools that help me navigate through Life. Whether it’s elements I compose my photographs and videos with, or the music where I share my experiences of the path that I walk, not only as a tool/reminder for myself to use when needed, but also to provide the same tools to another in need, giving an opportunity for another rose to blossom in this world, wherever they may be, showing me the grand opportunity of sharing All that I create from the heart unconditionally.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I find great Joy in the process/journey of following the heart, which has never led me astray, with my work or Life in general, so long as I trust in knowing that it will guide me exactly where I belong when I Am ready, motivating me to study and practice my craft daily, to create the moment opportunity meets preparation, but as I mentioned, it took a lot of detachment that I learned early in the journey, when I was in El Paso a couple months after quitting my job to pursue photography full time.
I began delivering food for Favor, and after a couple of weeks doing so, the car broke down. I had no funds for a mechanic, no transportation except a skateboard, and that same week, I broke the brand NEW $4000 camera that I bought with the last of my money from work, while skating down the hill to photograph a concert a couple miles away. Leaving me battered and broken, I walked up the hill, returning to the comfort of the friend’s couch where I slept, to lie in the darkness of their living room, staring at the ceiling with tears in my eyes from the pain and frustration of adapting to this new Life, when a voice from within arose, telling me, “You did not quit your job to deliver food, use the tools you have as they are”, and poof, a new perspective was born.
The next day, I checked the damage of the camera, only to realize that it was still operable, but only in Auto-Mode, which hurt like hell at first, because I could not alter the settings to my liking after shooting in Manual for 7 years prior, but it taught me to focus on what I was capturing vs how I captured it. Allowing me to document such pure and amazing moments during my time in what I like to call, “The Desert Gem”, especially now that I was traveling by skateboard, seeing the city from a different perspective, riding the concrete waves to wherever the heart led, which is how I met Karla Zanelli.
Karla is the curator at the El Paso Art Association, “Crossland Gallery”, who gave me my first spot in an exhibit to display my work for the world to experience, giving me the confidence and Faith in following my heart, which led to many more opportunities and accomplishments, preparing me for a month long stay in New York City, where I would dive into a deeper level of artistry, but I’ll save that One for next time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I Love going downtown for a nice skate/walk, in the heart of the city, where big ideas are born, and to celebrate them with a single cold brew and slice from Frank’s pizza afterwards, but my All time favorite pizza in town is hands down, “Spanky’s” on Telephone and 610. (Chef’s Kiss)
I enJoy the nature of the city and often visit Buffalo Bayou park to sit amongst the flowing water and trees, taking a break from the mental grind, where I have invited friends from time to time to join me, creating lovely memories and opportunities to share experiences, engaging the art of teaching/learning that is conversation.
With that being said, we definitely have to mob to the coast, where magic happens in the most unexpected ways. It’s just something about the beach at night, accompanied by the sound of the waves, the smell of salt in the air, with a deep violet sky glittering with the brightest stars, blanketed by quick moving clouds, that All leads to a sunrise like no other, that words simply do no justice.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mother All the way, for her nurturing and the wisdom that she provides through the journey, that usually comes as a surprise, but always when it’s needed most. From emotional support to food, and everything in between.
The Queen, for sure! The day we met, I was inspired to be the best of myself, for now I had plenty purpose to do so. She shows me everything that I Am, and ever since, All I do is effortless with little to no fear or doubt.
& my Grandmother who brought me home initially, after almost a decade of being away, unbeknownst to the garden she built for me to plant my roots in the darkness to grow towards the Light, eventually blossoming with the same Love she gave unconditionally, that I implement in All that I create.
