We had the good fortune of connecting with Loan Kieu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Loan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Every decision we make in life is a risk. The results of those choices may impact us positively or negatively. There is something scary about the unknown and deciding to take that risk or not. It took me a while, but I’ve decided that I don’t want to look back and wonder ‘what if’. I was an elementary teacher for eleven years and deciding to give up what defined me all those years was extremely difficult. Imagine choosing between your calling and your dream. It was the biggest risk I’ve taken in my entire life; going from something I loved to perusing something new and uncertain. In the end, it’s all about taking the chance; go on that trip, eat the cake, buy the shoes, and take the risk!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our mission is to help make getting dressed easier by curating comfortable, stylish, and affordable clothing for women during every stage of life in order to enhance their beauty and confidence. My favorite part so far are the relationships I have formed with my customers turned friends. I adore receiving messages about how much they love their new outfits, but most all how it makes them feel.
Purple Feathers is coming up on its one year anniversary, and I am beyond grateful. To say it has been easy, would be a total lie. I was making steady progress and accomplishing small goals I set for myself until the world was hit with so many unfortunate and unforeseen events. Instead of casting blame and making excuses, I learned to pivot and adapt. I reached out to other entrepreneurs, researched and experimented through trial and error. My biggest take away from all this is not to be afraid to ask for help. Those that want you to see you succeed will offer it up willing.
Looking to the future, I’m most excited to use my platform to give back. With a background in education, children will always have a special place in my heart. My ultimate goal is help as many kids as I can for as long as I can. I want my small business to make a big impact.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Houston is a melting pot of cultures with some of the best food, shopping, and entertainment! As a sports fanatic, there is nothing like cheering on the home team! Catch a home run ball at Minute Park, experience a last second buzzer beater at Toyota Center or join in on a touch-down dance in the end zone at NRG Stadium. Suppress all your food cravings at Bravery Chef Hall. With 5 restaurants under one roof, you’ll be sure to find something to please your palette. Complement your meal with a wine bar, cocktail bar, and outdoor patio bar. Enjoy a free show at The Miller Outdoor Theatre hillside or under a covered seating area. It offers diverse performances like ballet, musical theatre, classical films, and world music and dance. There’s something for everyone at City Centre. Shop until you drop at the many retailers, take your pick of the various restaurants/patio dining, and then end the day by gathering at the Plaza for some live music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe that people come into our lives for specific reasons and impact it somehow. So I would like to dedicate my shoutout to everyone that I have had the pleasure of crossing paths with whether for only a short while or are still part of my life today. My family deserves a huge shoutout for encouraging, supporting, and making me laugh out loud daily! The biggest and loudest shoutout goes to my mom who has taught me so many invaluable life lessons. She’s instilled in her seven children a strong work ethic and perseverance. Mama La lives by the belief that we get what we give. With that, I want to encourage everyone to See the Good, Be the Good, and Do Good.
