We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Jacob and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Coming from a family filled with competitive athletes, I often heard the phrase “Failure is not an option”. It was spoken aloud, written on the shirts of sports brands, and was listed on plenty of posters. For the longest I internalized this statement and when I felt that I had failed, it consumed me to the point that I would not move forward. It wasn’t until I started my business that I began to view failure differently. Let’s face it, failure is 100% an option! It’s what you do after failure that is vital. You can choose to fail and become stagnant, or you can fail and choose to make beauty from ashes. The choice is yours. However, in choosing the later, you allow yourself to create solutions for a better tomorrow. You would not have known that you needed to add that “special ingredient” to your recipe if you had not made your food and realized that it didn’t taste good. You could not master riding a bike if you hadn’t fallen off a few times. The first candles that I made smelled like mosquito spray and chapstick. They were beyond awful. But, it was then that I realized how to craft a candle which burned properly and smelled good! 350+ candles with new homes across the United States and I am so glad I was able to learn from my mistakes!
What should our readers know about your business?
It is my hope that I can spread light and love through each and every non-toxic, product that I sell, it’s what sets my business apart. I strive to consistently produce high quality products that create positive experiences and that my customers love. While Renew Candle Co. started with soy wax candles, I am expanding my business and currently offer wax tarts, car diffusers, room sprays and soon… perfumes/colognes, body lotions, bath bombs, and more! The journey has not been easy, but it has been more than rewarding. When I started this business I was struggling with anxiety and depression. I had just lost a loved one, was having health complications, and to top it off, this was all happening during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was tough to wake up and get out of bed, let alone want to be creative. However, I knew that there were other people who were experiencing pain as I was. So, I created candle labels with positive life quotes to help inspire and encourage others just like myself. The beauty has been seeing the joy and excitement that my products have brought to my customers! Who knew a candle could put such a huge smile on someone’s face. I pray that my story/business inspires the next person to follow their dreams and fight to push through the difficult times. I’ve learned that no matter how difficult times may get, things can and will get better. So don’t give up!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man! Houston has so many options! Well, given that the World has healed and it is post-pandemic, it would go a little something like this… The only way to start the day would by eating at some of my favorite breakfast spots in the city: Avalon diner for the savory steak and eggs, Voodoo Donuts for world-class vegan eats, and last but not least the chicken and waffles at the famous, Breakfast Klub! Now, to help the food digest, we would have to go shopping. I can proudly admit that I love a good Target run and will unashamedly spending hours there. But for the sake of sightseeing, we would make our way to the Houston Galleria or check out the locally-owned boutiques in the Montrose area. Depending upon the ever-changing Houston weather, we could go to see Waterwall near the Galleria, see a festival at Discovery Green, or take a hike in Terry Hershey Park. Last but not least, the night life! I am someone who prefers a laid back bar over a club any day. So uptown or Memorial City-City Center’s night life is the perfect place for me!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today if it were for the support and love from my family and friends! The idea of Renew Candle Co. was birthed after sitting with my family, brainstorming, and organizing my ideas. After all of my candle supplies arrived, they stayed up late for multiple nights to help me make all of the candles for my first launch! My friends helped me not only market my new inventory, but also bought multiple candles and wax tarts. In addition, my family and friends help me to continue on and stay focused even when the going gets tough.
