We had the good fortune of connecting with Amethyst Farrar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amethyst, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My personal experience led me to start AmethystTheGem.com. My goal was to create a community for techies and newbies ready to break into tech. In my first article with VoyageHouston, I discussed the challenges I faced at the start of my career. Unlike many of my peers, I did not have a college degree when I started in tech. I had to work my way up in the industry, and I gained a lot of knowledge on the way. Now, I am sharing that knowledge with the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Amethyst The Gem is a community where people learn, network, and get inspired. I created AmethystTheGem.com because I wanted to create a platform to help people get into tech. I just recently launched a free coding resource guide for anyone interested in learning to code. Over the past year, I received so many DMs from people asking how they can get started with programming at a low cost. What’s a lower cost than free? Since I was already sharing free resources on social media, I thought it would be great to create a free resource guide. I also started a LIT (Life In Tech) blog and Tech Talk series where I share advice and actionable tips. What sets my business apart from others is my limited edition STEM-inspired apparel. When techies want fun and stylish clothing, they shop with me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For food, we’d have to visit Sunshines Vegetarian Deli on OST. This restaurant has the best vegan and vegetarian food you will find in Houston. The spicy nachos, and the beyond meat burger are a must. Next, we’d probably head over to Axelrad to enjoy great drinks and live music. Houston Sauce Pit is another restaurant we’d have to visit. I guarantee you it’s the best vegan BBQ you’ll ever have. As soon as you take a bite, you’ll forget it’s vegan. The food truck is located to the left of the Turkey Leg Hut (another must-try). Of course, we would need to spend our weekend at the hottest brunch spots. For a relaxing brunch, we would visit Moxie’s Bar & Grill. For a day party brunch, we would visit Atomic Bottle.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves the most praise and recognition in my story. My mom, father, grandmother, and sisters played a key role in my life. They are all the reasons why I am the amazing woman I am today. Although I am grateful for them all, I want to shoutout my mother, Erika. My mom worked in tech sales and tech consulting. She knew everything you could know about tech. A true tech guru. I still remember the day I went to work with her on Bring Your Child To Work Day. I was so excited to be able to test all the new technology. This experience is what started my love for tech. As a child, whenever the computer broke, I was always running to fix it, and my mom was right there helping me along the way. We even got a chance to build a computer together. Even with all of the knowledge I’ve gained, I still call her and ask for her advice on technology.
