We had the good fortune of connecting with Ayo Fashoro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ayo, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I created M.A.D this year to build an affordable streetwear brand that holds a meaning deeper than fashion. The brand not only represents the city I’ve spent most of my life in, Missouri city commonly known as MO’ city, but it also represents a turning point in my life. More About Dreams is my way of showing the world that you can bring your passion and ideas to life.
In a world full of many cruelties and much injustice, this brand stands as a reminder that we as African Americans are no longer solely dreaming for equality but making it goal that must be obtained. It is not about fashion… It’s More About Dreams.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I set myself about with my use of materials and quality of work. From Velour to Sherpa to 3m I have already in the short time of being a brand used a plethora of materials which have allowed me to really just have fun and be creative. The road hasn’t been smooth as I’ve faced the hardships like learning the ropes of the clothing industry. However, I look at everything as a learning experience and have already learned a lot of valuable lessons. Most of the struggles I’ve faced have stemmed from my desire to make sure every item that “MAD” releases is the best quality it can be. I have already had about 3 or 4 products completely made that I decided not to release just because I know that they could have been made better. I want to be able to take pride in every item I release.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are starting off at Turkey Leg Hut, or Taste Bar for sure those are my favorite restaurants in Houston and are a must for anyone who comes to the city. When it comes to having a good time there are plenty of places like Seaside, Grooves, and the address that once you get a couple drinks in are always a fun time. I also recommend going downtown at night and walking around Houston its one of favorite pass times and it always a good time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be able to have M.A.D without the help, the Support and the Love of one person, Kyra Jackson. Kyra is my driving force and without her I would not be where I am today. From the late nights helping me package orders, helping me set up Pop up and staying long hours with me during photoshoots she has been here every step of the way and she deserves a shoutout even more then I do.
