We had the good fortune of connecting with Begoña Chapital and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Begoña, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

It was definitely to empower women, I was going trough a divorce back in time and realize how vulnerable were the women even in a “confortable situation” so I was thinking if I am struggling I wouldn’t imagine the women from small comunities in Mexico where they have to work all day for not fair prices. So I started designing some accesories and handcrafted by women in tiny locations in Chiapas and Puebla, all of them struggling as me, even if this wasn’t a fortune this tiny commerce between us would make a difference in their life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was always involved in design, my family busines was a furniture factory where my dad designed and owned a decoration store,I always accompanied him to busines travels so since I was a kid I was reading decoration magazines instead of anything else. Art has always been part of my life and creation is my dayly motivation. I like to decorate, paint, create in every way.

Hand bag straps is how bchbyhand started but this was just the begining, one thing lead me to another, the possibilities are enormous. I made a strap for myself as a relaxations therapy while my divorce and people stoped me on the streets to asked me about it until one day that I had the courage to tell them that straps and designing was my business and that I would make one for them if they want.

The lesson I have learned is that work hard is always recognize and even if the path is not always easy there is the a way to not be afraid and start been an entrepeneur and in my case showing my daughters that women are strong and that we can achieve anything we want as long as we work hard.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
With time I have learned to enjoy simple pleasures, so a nice glass of wine, friends, a cool museum and nature would be ideal.

I love patios, for a meal I love the hipster vibe of the heights, Coltivare it’s so unique and in the loop Kata robata is one of my fav places to eat.

Museums, MFAH its always enjoyable and walking around Menil collection and seat on that green space give me peace.

If I have time I like to visit the zoo, when is not packed, the monkey exhibits it’s what I like the most.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First to all the women that work hard everyday to raise a family, specially single moms and of course a big thanks to my friends and family that always belive in me and encourage me with their advise and support, Jessica, Gabriel, Marie, Stephanie, Shalini, …
