We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Daniel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
In having a mental health practice I am able to create an opportunity to redefine what mental health is and how it is regarded. Too often, especially in communities of color mental illness/mental health carries a negative stigma. Instead of allowing that stigma to persist my business aims to educate clients and members of the community alike. Through education, counseling, and mentorship programs, my business strives to change the narrative surrounding mental health making it common, personal, and a priority. In doing this I am helping to bridge the gap between those suffering with mental illness and those actually receiving treatment.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner and operator of a mental health private practice called Voice Counseling and Life Skills. Here my focus is to identify and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral concerns. In the most simple terms I am in the business of helping others. As a Licensed Professional Counselor or Psychotherapist my job is to help others access the best parts of themselves. I strive daily to help others overcome whatever struggle, concern or stronghold they feel they may be up against. This is not always an easy feat, however I feel that what sets me apart is my passion for people. My aim is not to be famous or to get rich but to focus on helping, and making connections in a personalized way. I have been in business for 5 years now and although exciting, it is still scary if I am being honest. There are still moments of uncertainty, however I believe that what has gotten me here, and has kept me is the satisfaction that comes in being able to have a positive impact in the life of someone else. The road is far from easy yet it is fulfilling, therefore irreplaceable. Along with having a private practice I am also an author. Writing has always been my happy place, therefore I was excited to find a way to combine my love for writing with my passion for helping others. My most recent title is, “My True Kolors.” My True Kolors is an adult coloring book and journal combo that aims to relieve stress and provides a creative outlet for its readers. Its filled with positive affirmations, stress-relieving coloring patterns, and self-exploratory journal prompts. What can I say; therapy is what I do in all forms.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a major homebody however if I were to give a tour of the city it would consist of low key hangout spots and good eats. One must do would be Miller Outdoor Theater especially if there is a good show or concert. You cant beat free entertainment, and nice weather out on a hill. Another stop on the tour would be the Truck Yard. This is an awesome place with a great atmosphere to find an array of tasty treats from various food trucks. The Turkey Leg Hut is another staple in Houston. Worth the wait, this place allows you to support a local black business, network, and/or just vibe out.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I hate to sound as if I am giving a speech at an acclaimed awards show, however I truly have to thank God. My faith has been the cornerstone of my success, and is responsible for helping me navigate those uncomfortable learning curves, unexpected roadblocks, and treacherous hills Iv’e climbed. Outside of that, there have been so many people who have influenced my journey however, this shoutout is dedicated to my girls; Lanetra Diaz, Kiana Scott Mayse, and Porsche Randall. These ladies (two of which are co-coordinators for our youth outreach program and one whom I serve on the board of her non profit) have literally been a sounding board and a support system. Through my countless ideas, tears, and tantrums they have genuinely pushed me to keep moving forward. They have allowed me to be me without editing my passion. Their support and encouragement has been undeniable and I am forever grateful.
