We had the good fortune of connecting with Caleb Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caleb, what are you inspired by?
Singing Christian music, a lot of times I thought, would be repetitive or redundant. But I was so wrong! I’m inspired by “experience”. Life happens, we react…that’s what makes a great song. Specifically for me, life happening, seeing God in situations and reaction is very motiving.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Christian artist. It’s funny because for a while I identified as a Gospel artist – simply because I was black. But after more growing just as an individual, that changed. I mean…gospel artists are Christian too – right? Well, my music is not always what you expect from a black male singing about the Lord. I’ve been told the lyrics feel more personal than usual…almost sensual. I can’t say why that may be for some. I know I simply sing how I feel about God and the love I’ve experienced during my journey. Getting here was not easy! Being comfortable to sing the way I do about what I do…I never would have thought I’d be here, and for so many reasons! I don’t have a tone you anticipate, my sound is often categorized as pop…what black male can you say has a pop sound and sings Christian music? Not many! Also, I don’t necessarily hide certain elements of my personal life. For example, I would never hide that I have a husband. That, for many “believers”, should somehow eliminate me from having a relationship with God that is so bright, so life-changing, and loving to sing about. At the end of it all, it came down to me deciding I was still good enough and that God did still love me no matter what or how society interprets or perceives God. Black, sings pop-styled music and “a homosexual”…one would think everything is against me. But when God is for you…! I’ve learned that God is merciful and God gives grace, not man…granted God has provided many examples and opportunities for us to do the same. How God moves is so amazing! I just want the world to know it’s good over here on this side. I know there have been so many stories of people representing God in horrible ways. But that’s just it…in spite of us, God is still good. Living following God is the best decision I could have ever made, and I know it would be for others too!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow! A full itinerary? That’s not my specialty. I’m usually the rider. As long as it doesn’t compromise my character or attempt to hurt my well-being, I’m down for whatever. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband (yes husband), my mother (who taught me in such subtle ways that impacted my life), and my siblings for always being examples of love.
