Meet Carolina Alfaro | Fitness Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Alfaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe the word “risk”, is both a strong and scary word for many. For myself, it was definitely both, as a single mom of two, it was something I had to give some thought to because it was not only for myself, I was risking for but for my children as well. I worked a full-time job when I decided to open my gym to the public in January of 2021. At this time, I only offered 2 class times, a 6pm and 7pm. Not knowing if COVID would affect my decision on doing this, giving the virus was its peak and peoples concern and safety of course on joining a public gym, however this was not the case. I quickly expanded, maxing me out of my time classes, I added 2 more class times, putting me now at 5am, 6am, 6pm and 7pm. I worked much harder trying to keep everyone safe, purchasing disinfectants, sanitizers, checking temperatures, and requesting my clients to wear masks. This was a risk, because I was not sure how long this would hold off, I lost clients during this process due to being infected with the virus, some had to leave and never came back, and some did come back. I continued to work my full-time job, as I was afraid my gym would not be a steady income. Then in October of 2021, I made the hardest decision of my life, I put in my 2-week resignation at my job. I never stopped dreaming of following my passion, I needed to give it my 100 percent, I risked it all and went full time with my gym. I am not afraid of risks, I’ve always been a strong woman, a divorcee of 17 years from a DV marriage, to a widow from my late fiancé, whom I lost to COVID in 2020. The women/clients that follow me, always say to me “Carolina, how do you do it, you are one of the strongest women we know”. I believe life is short, you have to be happy, follow your dreams, don’t be afraid, don’t go through life regretting something, that you could’ve done earlier, life is beautiful thing, if you don’t risk it for that then can you actually tell yourself later in life…. I did risk it all to follow my passion and dreams, and I absolutely have no regrets. I mean can you actually say you regretted it. I think not….
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My gym is actually a private HOME GYM GARAGE, and as female fitness coach and strong believer in women empowerment, I wanted to create a unique fitness environment, an ALL women gym. Not only that but using what I enjoy, to coach others, which is weight training. I started my fitness journey 5 years ago, at that time I did not have no knowledge on weights, I figured only men weight trained. My first go to fitness was running and dance videos from home. Then I thought, I want to do something different, I want to prove to myself that as a woman I am physically strong, I can do what men can do. I wanted to break out of the stereotype. It was not easy, as I had to train my body to do more than what I believed I was capable of. The challenge was definitely there, I didn’t quit I pushed myself, working a full-time job with 2 kids in competitive sports, waking up at 4am to make my 5am workout 5 to 6 days a week. It has put me to where I am today, the challenge was worth it I can now use my expertise to coach others, “women”, in weight training, you are capable ladies, you are strong. you are amazing. Your body can sustain almost anything, it’s your mind that needs convincing, and I am here to show and prove to you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is one of the biggest cities in the country! Believe it or not, I am a foodie, lol so I would definitely have my best friend visiting the area, try out some of my favorite restaurants! Let’s head to Galveston, Gypsy Joint, for some of the biggest wings you will ever have, Cajun Craven for some of the best crawfish, Harrys Restaurant for some Brunch, Viola and Agnes’ in Seabrook for some amazing Creole, Cool Cow Creamery in Kemah for some delicious ice cream, Turkey Leg Hut for some of the best stuffed turkey legs ever! A girl’s night out to midtown, Glorias for some delicious Martinis, Sunset Bar for some dancing and best Houston rooftop viewing! I am also a kid at heart, so let’s go to the zoo!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person that made my dream come true Pete Chavez, my late fiancé, whom I lost to COVID in 2020, he believed in me.
