We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecilia Alvarado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cecilia, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
I eventually want to become a one-stop-shop for custom items. We often find the almost perfect item or gift and simply want to change one or two small details to make it just right. That’s where I come in. My business focuses on custom and personalized products. I wanted to provide a place where people could customize their accessories or the gifts they are giving their loved ones. Whether it be an inside joke, a favorite color, a quote, or a photo of their dog; custom designs can transform a gift and make it even more special.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Besides my business, I currently work as an Interventionist in an elementary school in ALIEF-ISD. I help struggling students from various grade levels by targeting their needs in a smaller setting. I am very proud of everything I have accomplished in the past 14 years as an educator. I feel very blessed that after this long I still wake up and enjoy doing what I do. Knowing I am making a difference, even if that means just being able to brighten up a student’s day, keeps me motivated in this difficult time after the pandemic. Being in a school has influenced my business because teachers love to shop. We have so many themed days throughout the year that it only seems right to provide apparel and accessories to match these occasions. It helps make for a more fun-filled day for us as well as for the students. They love seeing their teachers and principals wearing themed accessories and apparel.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone came to visit Houston for a few days I would start by taking them for some of the best breakfast tacos at Taqueria Laredo. I would want them to explore Houston through its bike trails and then make sure we stop to get fresh produce and Mexican delights at The Houston’s Farmers Market. I would want them to visit Discovery Green and hopefully, one of their wonderful markets will be set up. For even more shopping and delicious treats, we would make a stop at Post, the former post office. They have such great shops but just the design alone is a good reason to want to go there. At some point during their visit, hopefully, during crawfish season, we would have to go eat at LA Crawfish, then maybe catch a movie at Rooftop Cinema or one of our drive-in theatres and follow with a nightcap at La Carafe which is said to be haunted.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shout-out to my coworkers. I cannot stress enough how much my ALIEF-ISD family has played a part in my business. My coworkers are the ones that first suggested I start selling my creations. They were my first customers and through their referrals, I have been able to expand my business. We spend more time at work than we do with family, and I am very lucky to have such supportive and amazing colleagues. To this day, some of my best customers are the ones I see every day and this makes what I do even more enjoyable. I can’t help but smile when my eye catches one of my creations on a fellow educator or in a classroom.
