We had the good fortune of connecting with Chastoni Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chastoni, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Every experience is different, and each experience is unique in its own way. We don’t have definitive guidelines on persistence, and giving up. The decision to continue doing something, or to stop, is part of the art of living, and that’s what makes every choice interesting. Me personally , if I start ANYTHING, I’m going to finish! Do I get frustrated? Yes. Do I get stressed? Yes. I have even been so frustrated that I thought about throwing in the towel . In those moments I go back to a specific quote from Malcolm X…” Stumbling is not falling”. I have stumbled a million times, but I’ve also succeeded a million and one! That’s a win in my book. It’s not worth doing/starting if Its too easy and you never stumble! Our stumbles build character!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art/creative work isn’t just about putting pencil to paper, or brush to canvas. I believe my passion for art was simply in me from birth and I haven’t looked back since! My pieces/ work could be described as a way of seeing the world, a way of expression, oftentimes a compulsion: I simply must create! It’s a way that I explore my world and imagination. I always aim to make everyone who sees/comes in contact with my work be inspired in some kind of way! I hope to inspire every beginning painter to take steps into learning a new medium, or an accomplished artist to experiment with a new technique. Art is teaching, art is learning. Art can be exciting, empowering and an expression of love. This world needs LOVE! I’d say that art/creating can be a challenge: both frustrating and rewarding at the same time, leading to a sense of accomplishment or even a determination to do more. I’ve created some of my best work when I’ve went through hardships that life had thrown me. Of course , I put passion into everything I do but I could feel that passion a little more in those hardship moment pieces. I made art/creating an escape and in the end, It has always worked in my favor!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would for sure get lost in Deep Ellum, TX! Deep Ellum is by far my favorite neighborhood in Dallas. It has a fascinating history that dates back to the 19th century as well as some amazing wall murals to look at! Just wander the streets, pop into a boutique shop or grab a bite at a hipster cafe. There is so much soul and character in this neighborhood, you’re bound to find someplace new each time you visit!
We’d make our way to Trinity Groves. It is fairly new to the Dallas scene. It is a trendy up and coming neighborhood. It is located on the banks of the Trinity River at the foot of the iconic Margaret Hunt Hill Suspension Bridge. Maybe grab some ice cream and enjoy the beautiful area.
Find our way down to the Dallas Farmer’s Market and explore/shop! The indoor venue, Market Shops, is filled with artisanal vendors, local specialty shops, and four restaurants. There’s so many unique gifts and souvenirs, as well as local foods!
For the night life adventure, we’d go to the Oak Lawn area with bars, restaurants, and stores found throughout Cedar Springs Rd and Oak Lawn Avenue. It’s always a good time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and for most, my Lord and Savor ; Jesus Christ! I can honest say that I do believe he sprinkled a little extra when he created me! Everyday I wake up with another idea/talent or I’ll just find myself trying something new and actually be pretty good at it! I surprise myself often LOL!
And of course my family, who have been supportive since day 1! They sometimes don’t fully understand my visions but they never shoot them down! I’m forever grateful for my A-team!
