We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
If I’m being honest, Moorflics was born from both frustration and vision. As an actor, I kept seeing how programming about my community was one-dimensional. Too often, Black American stories were flattened into stereotypes or recycled narratives. I knew there was a greater spectrum, stories of resilience, creativity, tenderness, complexity that was not being told.

Moorflics was created out of necessity, to expand that spectrum and to offer variety where there was limitation. At the same time, I wanted to build a company that served as a safe space for creatives. This industry has a reputation for exploiting talent, and we are determined to be the opposite. At Moorflics, we value integrity as much as we value talent. That combination of integrity and artistry is the foundation we stand on, and it’s what will allow us to create work that’s not only entertaining, but lasting.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
“What sets Moorflics apart is our ability to truly think outside the box. We are emboldened by stories because we know how deeply our community is craving what we are creating. I am proud of the team we’ve built, each member holding multiple degrees, multi-talented, and carrying both credentials and creativity. We aren’t just fueled by excitement; we have the process, the expertise, and the vision to serve our audience well.

My journey here has been one of trial and error. Starting a business this early wasn’t something I planned, but there’s something in me that refuses to quit. Nothing about the entertainment industry is easy, there’s always a delicate dance between talent, timing, and politics across every discipline.

The biggest lessons I’ve learned are to always have a plan, but to also allow that plan to flow naturally. God honors motion, and sometimes you have to let yourself be surprised by where that motion takes you. I’ve also learned how essential faith is, and the importance of naming your price proudly because value must first be recognized by the one offering it.

I want the world to know that Moorflics is a brand built on faith and integrity, but also a brand of quality. Most importantly, we exist to show our audience who they are, who they were, and who they can be. Educating while entertaining is never easy, but we’ve found our rhythm. And in that two-step, we are building something lasting

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This might be a little hard, I like staying home but for fun we’ll hit cidercade. For dinner Bungalow Bungalow Bungalow!!! My favorite place in Houston to eat. The food is amazing and the customer service is just as good. Brunch and Leeland. The vibe is chill, $5 mimosas and the brisket potato bowel go crazy. If it’s in March, we gotta hit the Houston Rodeo and grab triple J’s BBQ. Definitely have to go to Break Life to tear some stuff up. If they are up for it, head up to Fredericksburg, there’s a winery up there that is pretty cool.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I have to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Entrepreneurship is very much a faith-based journey, and I’ve faced some hard lessons along the way, but I’ve been covered at every step.

I thank my parents for laying the foundation of stewardship in my life. My older brother Eric, for being an example of success, and my little sister Tayler, for reminding me to smile through the challenges. My Aunt Ronice, whose love has always been endless, and my late Uncle Keith, without him, there would be no Moorflics.

I owe a great deal to Norfolk State University and my mentor, Professor Stockard, who showed me the true value of storytelling. To my brothers Chris, Terrance, Solomon, and Garret, they have been with me through it all.

And most importantly, to my partner, Kiara Anders. She has invested in me in countless ways and continues to do so today. She is the heartbeat behind this company and the reason I push as hard as I do.

I know that’s a long list, but the truth is, any success I achieve is not mine alone. It’s a reflection of the love, support, and belief that all of these people poured into me
