We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominique, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Tha Goddess House body waxing to give my clients a more personal experience. I noticed in corporate beauty industry jobs I was a number and the companies saw my clients as a check. Services had to be done quick and I had to shove product down their throat. It felt nothing like why I wanted to be in the beauty industry.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart in my industry is my love for making people feel comfortable and beautiful. My clients literally forget they are getting waxed lol. We have mini “therapy” sessions every appointment. We cry we laugh and we celebrate each other. I’ve been with clients during weddings, home buying and everything life can bring. It’s a safe space and they know it.

I am here working for myself today after almost 10 years in the industry working for other companies. I found myself stressed, overwhelmed and losing my passion working corporate beauty jobs. They have no love for the industry and most of them aren’t even licensed for the services their businesses provide. I decided that I would rather work for myself and really put my skills and personality out there. People tell me all the time that I am a light and now I’m able to shine. The thought of making my own money and not having an hourly is a very scary thought. I’m a mom plus a dance mom and I’m needed in so many ways that having a secure check just makes things easier. I’m so thankful that my family have my back. They believe in me and are my driving force and really the reason I push hard.

The lessons I’ve learned since being self employed for a little over a year is that it’s 24/7. I literally wake up out of nowhere at 4am and think of things I need to do for my business. I have an Amazon cart of over $2000 worth of things I want to get for my business essential and just things I want lol. I’m always looking at ways I can upgrade services for my clients to enhance the experience. I’ve learned it’s all on me. My wax pot broke on a Saturday and it’s on me to get another one before my client on Monday. It can be stressful but it’s mine and I rather stress over my name than someone else’s.

I’m a Houston girl born and raised. I’ve seen this city grow so much and I’m so proud to say I own a business in my home town. Tha Goddess House is a safe place for women to come and bare it all, literally lol. I have a passion to give my clients the feeling of being a goddess in their everyday lives. It’s not just about getting waxed. We are going to lose weight together. We gonna write that book together. We are going to start that job together. I’m here to show you who you really are. Walking into the treatment room knowing you won’t be judged or talked about. Walking out feeling like a GODDESS!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As much of a homebody as I am I do like to move around the city a little bit. I love sushi and I love a AYCE sushi place. Sushi Masa in Sugarland is my number 1 spot, for a AYCE the sushi is fresh and the are quick. One of my fav things about Houston is the pop up shop scene. Just about every weekend I can shop locally with a small business. We also have amazing food trucks that I couldn’t name if I wanted too. Now when I looking for a “outside” vibe I follow a DJ named AuxCordWhisperer usually where he performs I’m in the building. He does an R&B night at the garden htx it’s a vibe every time. I do also enjoy going to Dona Letis the food the vibe it get me right every time. Love their fruit juices.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents deserve a shout out. They have instilled a work ethic in me that drives my success everyday. My parents are my biggest support system. They know no matter what I touch it turns to gold! My home salon Faze 2 in Missouri City, Tx deserve a shout out. The owners there gave me an opportunity to open a suite with very little clientele. They believed in me and saw the passion in my eyes.
