We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kozhi Sidney Makai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Kozhi Sidney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I discovered a talent I had in college for connecting deeply with people from the stage. I didn’t know there was a business or job for this. When I explored, I found myself doing what I loved and benefitting others at the same time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kozhi Makai Worldwide is an idea studio focused on using behavioral science to help leaders thrive — especially in the workplace. Our unique value proposition is that you get me and my almost 30 years of worldwide speaking, coaching, advising, and facilitation experience. Most of our clients are referred or repeat; that speaks a great deal to the value we bring to our clients. That makes me very proud that we impact our clients to the degree that they see value worth returning to or sharing. I started my business journey focused on me; how I can earn enough to meet my needs. While that’s normal, I see how selfish that was and how it kept me in the valley too long; I could have began my mountain claim sooner had I focused on what my clients needed more than anything else. When I shifted my focus to what moves, drives, and challenges my clients, that’s when I really become a businessman. Today, I focus on how to help my clients go From Potential to Performance™ and that drives each of my actions; interestingly, my needs are always met and I don’t have to waste precious resources on that. As I think about that I want people to know, I don’t have any special skills; I’ve just developed an uncanny ability to deeply listen and help clients find the courage to live out their core values.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve spent most of my time on the Northside of the city, but enjoy the theater district of downtown. I’m a symphomaniac and love the opera. I’d want my best friend to experience Jones Hall and all it offers. Away from downtown, we’d be in The Woodlands experiencing the eclectic food offerings including Indian and Mediterranean.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story began at North Harris College. Dr. Severo Balason, Jr. recruited me and facilitated my transition from Zambia to the United States. He went even further by helping me engage on campus and introduced me to just about all the decision makers on campus…including the President. He remains a very good friend and mentor today, and I’m deeply grateful for his leadership. There are so many people at North Harris College to helped refine the blueprint that’s led to all my success. Trust me, it’s A LOT of people and I can’t list them all.
