We had the good fortune of connecting with Ed (loco) Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ed (loco), what is the most important factor behind your success?
When we started Heights Guitar Tech over 7 years ago we noticed that there was no other guitar repair shops in the area with a quick turn around. Bob and Ed take the time to treat every job big or small the same…we do not approach any job with arrogance, basically we are just proud to be able to work somewhere we love and that spreads the joy of music. We ourselves are working musicians and we know what its like to need our guitar repaired in time for our next gig. Basically, we repair your instruments just like they are our own. We listen to every customer and will accommodate most emergency Services even on a backed up busy day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Here at HGT we are all musicians, we all love our craft because we know how important it is to have your instrument just as ready for the next show as you are. Bob Hensley- Bob was one of our founding members and we are sad to say that he retired earlier this year. Bob has over 30 years repair experience. Bob plays the guitar, violin, and even the banjo! He is exceptionally talented and spends his time these days teaching and playing music near his home. Ed Reyes (Loco) – Ed is a guitar repair/musical legacy…his talents for both see to stem from the long line of working musicians in his family. Ed has been a touring musician in the punk rock/hardcore genre for much of his life. Ed has over 25 years repair experience. He has toured with local bands as well as world known bands such as Verbal Abuse, DRI, and Gang Green. Ed puts the same passion in guitar repair as he always has with his music. Andrew Scott- Andrew is the newest team member here at HGT, a native Houstonian who moved to California where he started guitar repair while living there. He has worked for major guitar manufacturers such as Schecter and ESP. Andrew brings great skill and drive to learn more to our team.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Houston music scene is far from where it was in years past, but we still have some awesome venues and great places to hang out. The best music venues we have these days are pretty spread out. HGT works with many musicians that play places like, House of Blues, BFE Rock Bar, Scout Bar, and White Oak Music Hall. The small underground shows at dive bars like The White Swan or record shops seem to gather the best of the usual suspects. I could name a dozen taco trucks that will feed you like you went home to visit your momma. Basically, if its in Houston…its good!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When the idea for this shop came to our owner/founder Steve Boriack and co owner Mitch Burman, they seemed to already have a team in mind. Ed Loco and Bob Hensley both came from the guitar repair background but had never worked together. Steve Boriack had a vision of creating a relaxed musician centric environment where everyone felt welcome and could count on to have their guitars repaired by guitar players. National touring musicians, Local bands, music venues, Ruben Dominguez from Fox 26news and local a backline production company have really made this one of a kind shop stand out from the others. We have all had the support of our families, friends, and community! Without all of these we just wouldn’t be.
