We had the good fortune of connecting with Geretha Mayers Terrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Geretha Mayers, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
When people ask me where I’m from I always answer “everywhere.” My father was military so we moved alot and I don’t really have a place I would call my hometown. Home for me is where my parents are living. My background and upbringing impacted me in a huge way and made me the person I am today. I grew up with the most wonderful parents and family. A family that loved and nurtured me. My parents raised my siblings and I to work hard, be independent and love God. This allows me to be bold, fearless and confident in everything I do. My hope is that I will touch people’s lives through fashion and my other endeavors. I want to empower people to be exactly who God made them and celebrate their gifts and uniqueness.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company is Laila Brandon Company. We are a multi-faceted company with focuses on fashion, real estate and publishing. What sets my company apart from others is my innate focus on my clients/business partners, communication/honesty and goal of empowering and encouraging everyone I meet. Business-wise – I am currently in the building phase. I have a number of completed projects but I am continuing to gain experience and expand my network. Building a business is not easy! I am actually building a legacy for my daughter. So the foundation of business must be solid for her and her future children (my grandchildren). There have been many challenges with the biggest one being finding people who will give you a chance to prove your work without immediately discounting you through an answer of NO or worse no response at all. I overcome the challenges by continuing to work hard and produce the best work or product. I also work hard to keep my mindset positive as your drive really equals your mindset. If you believe you can do it, you will do it and find a way no matter what. Lessons I have learned along the way are staying focus on what God says I am and not allowing anyone to define what I can or cannot do. If someone tells me no, then I simply find another way to make it happen. Lesson is there is no quitting, a no from someone could be a yes from the next person you ask. You have to keep going. I want the world to know that my company is the gift God gave me. It’s so much bigger than profits or fame and I treat it as such. Each person that I work with, I give my all and work hard to not only exceed their expectations but to leave them feeling loved, encouraged, empowered like they can conquer the world. If I do that, then my story is what it should be, showing the love of God through the gifts he gave me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area we for the weekend we would hit all parts of the city so she would experience all vibes. We would start the first day with breakfast/brunch at Taste Bar + Kitchen. They have the best chicken and waffles. Then we would head to do what girls do best….shop! A quick hop on the highway gets us to the Galleria Mall. With over 400 stores to explore we stay here until early evening and finish off with dinner at one of the many restaurants.

Day 2: We wake up early head over to Rice University for the sunrise light sequence then hit up Rice Village for breakfast and then shopping and supporting local boutiques. Next would be getting our nails done, lunch and then the afternoon would be reserved for visiting museums and the botanical gardens. Depending what time of year it is, tickets to the Houston Rockets would be how we end our night

Day 3: We would do a day trip to Galveston and be back in time to end the evening at City Centre with drinks and good food!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I want to dedicate this shoutout to….I keep a tight circle so everyone in that circle has been monumental in dreaming with me, supporting me and encouraging me. My parents have always been an amazing source of love and support. They love me for who I am and show up for everything no matter what I’m doing. My best friend of over 30 years has always been such a great sounding board with her endless wisdom. My boyfriend dries my tears, strengthens my belief in myself and is by my side for everything. Lastly, my late husband and our daughter are my reason for starting my company. Laila Brandon Company (LBC) is named in honor of them.
