We had the good fortune of connecting with Giset King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Giset, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to inspire women of all sizes and backgrounds. Nowadays media is focusing on a specific body type to promote health. Health is energy, strength, resting well and other components. Health can’t be measured merely by a number in the scale. I wanted to inspire women to be healthy for the right reasons. I wanted to show others that you can be anybody type and still be healthy. Even skinny girls are photoshopped in magazines and this messes up with women’s visions of health and with life expectations.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the CEO of Giset King Fitness and Co-Founder of Cafe Azul Tx Autismo. I am passionate about community education and empowerment. I am an educator, psychologist, speaker, and fitness instructor, all of them have something in common, community education, empowerment and advocacy. I believe in empowering individuals to create long-lasting impact in their own lives and to others that surround them. I am not going to tell you to need to be a certain size or weight. To my fitness clients, I empowered them to eat all food groups in moderation, live a balanced life and understand real health is not a number on the scale or a size is how to feel, your energy level, regularity, productivity, getting stronger each day and doing things you couldn’t do before. It has not been easy. Even though I was over 200lb, lost half my size and I am certified to teach a variety of fitness formats, sometimes people judge me because I am not “skinny”. I have thick thighs, I am short and I have loose skin from when I was size 16, and I am okay because, I am strong, I am active and I do what I love and it is okay. I believe in myself, my calling, and my passion. Eventually, people start realizing either they accept you or move out of the way because you are not stopping. I am not a faker, what you see, is what you get. I love the sense of community and tribe and when you join me in my fitness group or in my Non- profit organization, That is what you get.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh Lord, there are so many good spots. I would definitely take them to Galveston, to get some Lunch Buffet at Mario’s Sea Wall Italian Restaurant. The buffet has an amazing and beautiful view of the Sea Wall. Then we will take the Ferry to see the Dolphins and then finish with a coffee from MOD Coffee House. The place is small but has lots of character and has a mural across the street to take killer pictures. Another day I would love to take them to Kemah to have Lunch at Tookie’s Seafood, Food is so fresh and delicious. Go for a walk around Kemah BoardWalk and end with a coffee and fried pie from Damn Fine Coffee and Fried Pies. I am Puerto Rican so I would spend a few days making them homemade food. As days pass by I will give them some taste of Pearland. We will have lunch at Lotus Seafood, the best Cajun place in Pearland. They have killer wings, amazing snow crab legs, and superb fried rice. Then we would visit the Nature Trail at Shadow Creek. Finally, we will end up getting some coffee at Pearland Coffee Roasters, where the lavender Honey Latte is amazing and then pick up some baked goods from Caramelito’s Bakery. Then to end the week we can go downtown to have dinner at Batanga and then have some good music and laughs at Pete’s Dueling Bar. Great food and great memories.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We want to give a shout to Special Needs Parents. We love our kids, but society is not designed for inclusion and to accept individuals with a different processing system. I want to honor them and inspire them to dream, advocate and be an active agent in their community. Change is created by action.
