We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalisa Quinique and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalisa, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Looking back on the things I’ve given up on in that past while being able to see a clearer path today, has proven to me that giving up should’ve never even been an option for me. We live and we learn everyday, so I try not to regret much. Every time I get discouraged, I really have to sit back and think about the position I was in a year ago, or even two years ago. In May of 2021, I completed my first spirit walk in which I reached 1,300 ft. from the ground. The higher I climbed, the less chances I had of surviving trying to go back down. As I had to shimmy on the side of a mountain with no real protection, I could only think of one thing, “Its either up or out”. I definitely did not want to go out that way! As someone who suffers from anxiety, I make it a must to practice breathing exercises, and that’s all I could do to stay calm to get across the mountain. Just pacing myself and allowing myself to breathe. I will always take that experience as a sign to keep going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There are so many Artists who are upcoming and on the rise, so it’s definitely a must for us to try and stick out from the rest. It can be extremely difficult without a team, however, as an independent Artist, I can say that I feel so much more accomplished when I get things done alone. Writing has always been my thing, as well as my favorite subject in school and my favorite part of making music itself. I’ve been through tons of experiences and I talk a whole lot, so there’s always something to write about. Still hoping to build more connections and bonds with Audio Engineers, I’ve been teaching myself how to record and mix vocals. It’s been about 3 to 4 years of me self-engineering my songs, yet I’m still working on perfecting my mixing and mastering skills. As a former student musician, I’ve had the opportunity to learn how to play some instruments including the piano/keyboard , trumpet and some drums. I’ve recently revisited the keyboard and will be producing beats on some of my newer projects, which I am definitely excited to release! Also, I stream live on Twitch TV every Thursday night from my home studio, at 10pm EST, “All Things Music”. From thinking of song topics to actually writing lyrics and recording vocals. Allowing my supporters to watch me grow in my element as well as learn from me while I take notes from their feedback in the comment section. I also discuss life as an independent Artist while implementing mental health awareness in the process. This has been another great way for me to work on my anxiety while showing people more of who Jalisa Quinique is, raw and uncut. I’m not yet where I want to be in my music career, but I have a great idea of what it will feel like. The only thing for me to do is stay consistent. Consistency will always be the number one rule to achieving your goals, as well as believing in yourself 100%, regardless of who doesn’t.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting New York City, the first thing I’d do is take them to one of my favorite local restaurant chains uptown in Harlem and The Bronx, called “Jimbos”. It’s been 7 years since I’ve eaten any red meat, and Jimbos has the best Turkey Burgers you can get for less than $15 (fully loaded). I’d also probably go to a pool hall and have a few drinks, lose a few games since I’m not that good at pool, but it’s fun! We’d definitely either go to the studio or have a chill session at my home studio since most of my friends love to see me working on my craft, and I love getting insight from the people who have watched me elevate from the beginning. Other things to do in my city would be things as simple as shopping on the crowded streets of Manhattan or walking through the hot summer blocks of the city, eating an Italian icee from the corner cart. There are endless things to do so no matter what they’re into, they’ll definitely enjoy their visit!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to my cousins who are like my sisters. I don’t think they understand how strong their healing abilities are, as they do it without thinking. They’ve never missed an important moment in my life and they’re always the first people I’m calling with news, whether good or bad. This is a moment of gratitude from me to them, as I think back on all of the times they’ve had the right words or the right energy to make it all better, while still battling their own personal adversities. Always reminding me that they’re older and they know what’s best, I usually don’t like to admit it but this is absolutely true and I couldn’t imagine my life without them. I’ve never had an older sibling but I was blessed with a bunch of older cousins that will always have my best interest. I just want to give them the world.
