Meet Jay Tarentino | Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Tarentino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by a lot of artists and musicians like Kanye West, Tame Impala, Pharrell Williams, Wondagurl, Mike Dean, OPN, Wheezy and many more. Their production is crazy to me, so they inspire me to go crazy on my production and be different than everybody else so one day I can stand out just like them to somebody else in the future. I’ve always been about being different so them specifically taught me how to be creative in my own way without being afraid of what category I’m going to be put in. I just really like making new sounds.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music production is somewhat different than everybody else in the area I would say. My goal always been to stand out in the crowd just because they’re over 2,000 producers in my city itself making beats, so I always ask myself what I can do different you know. I listen to other genres of music other than rap sometimes so I can capture different chords, melodies and sounds that I can potentially add to my own. I would say it takes a lot of focus to remain 10 toes down when you are bringing a new sound to the game just because not every artist is up to date with what can be the next sound you know so is tough for me sometimes, but I know can pay off eventually. I just want to be the best music producer that I can be while bringing a sound nobody heard before and be amazed by it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I could take a friend out from another city, it would be mainly in Westheimer. I always like spending time there as much as I can just because it’s an overall vibe from food to clothing stores including Galleria. Night life in Westheimer is even crazier sometimes and it can definitely show how Houston really is to someone who is not really from there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a big shoutout to my mom for being my biggest supporter till this day just because she always believed in me and my passion for music more than anybody else. She always taught me to work hard for my dreams and never give up on them so if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be out here doing what I love to do the most. Another big shoutout goes to my big brother Neptune who is a studio owner himself, Last year around April, he gave me an opportunity to showcase my work to other artist who were looking for beats in the studio. He saw that I was hungry for work in the music scene, so he gave me a shot to be Neptune Studios’ In-House producer. Till this day he always been behind the scenes with me giving me feedback on how I should I approach things, what can I do in certain situations and more. He a cold engineer so if you need your songs mixed and mastered, he’s the guy.
