We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Stroud Sawyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenny, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I see risk as a balance between courage and preparation. You can’t grow without it, but you also shouldn’t walk into it blind. One of the biggest risks I took was leaving a secure career in law enforcement to become a hairstylist and start my own business. At the time, it felt terrifying, but looking back, it was the best decision I could have made for my family, mental health, freedom, and happiness. Risk has a way of forcing you to bet on yourself—and that’s where the real magic happens.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m most proud that my business, Styled by Stroud, has become a place where clients not only love their hair but also feel cared for and understood. I want the world to know that my brand is about more than beautiful hair—it’s about trust, connection, and giving every client the confidence to shine long after they leave my chair. I have truly built a relationship of trust with my clients and that’s not easy- it requires showing up as my best self everyday- but it is so worth it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to Houston for a week, I’d want them to get a real taste of the city’s personality. We’d definitely catch an Astros game at Minute Maid Park—because nothing beats the energy of Houston baseball. We’d spend an afternoon at Discovery Green, enjoying the park and maybe a picnic, and then head over to Saint Arnold Brewing Company for a tour and a pint.

One night, we’d grab a casual but amazing dinner at Brothers Pizzeria—because sometimes the best food is the unpretentious, local favorite. I’d take them thrifting in The Heights for one-of-a-kind finds, and we’d explore the neighborhood’s quirky shops and colorful murals.

Houston’s charm is in its mix—big city energy, incredible food, and laid-back, creative spots—and that’s exactly what I’d want them to experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without question, my biggest shoutout goes to my husband, Daniel. He’s the one holding our family together when I’m working long hours—handling dinners, practices, and everything at home so I can give my all to my clients. His support is the foundation that makes my career possible. I also have to recognize Taylor West, (my personal esthetician) and talented makeup artist I partner with for wedding and event styling. She’s not only incredibly gifted at her craft, but also an amazing single mom and dear friend whose drive and heart inspire me daily. And before my “pink collar” career, I had the privilege of working under strong mentors in law enforcement who taught me discipline, resilience, and how to lead with integrity—lessons I carry with me into my business today. Each of these people has shaped my journey in ways I’ll always be grateful for.
