We had the good fortune of connecting with Jillian JJ Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jillian JJ, what can you share with us about how Covid-19 has affected your business?
I had quite a few speaking engagements and projects that were cancelled due to Covid-19. Honestly, I’ve been maximizing my time by taking courses, reading and building out virtual programs.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been a radio personality for over 26 years. I’ve always loved my work but as I’ve gotten older, there are certain parts of the lifestyle that no longer served me. The most challenging part of my career was leaving radio to pursue what I was most passionate about. I almost had an identity crisis. I had to fight through the negative self-talk. I kept telling myself that my value decreased now that I was no longer attached to that brand. I’m glad that I was able to really see those issues and put the work in to resolve those issues. It took a lot of self-reflection and self-awareness. Since leaving the radio station, I’ve written two more books, Respect My Crown and All Falls Down (each available on Amazon), I just wrapped up my 8th year touring middle and high schools with my I’m Me Tour (an empowerment program for girls) and last year, my dreams came true when I was able to speak overseas in London, UK and Melbourne, Australia!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I love to eat! I could eat all day! I would start with brunch at The Breakfast Klub for chicken and waffles, have drinks and mingle at Steak 48 and then go next door to Bisou for good music and good vibes.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many fabulous women who support me, mentor me and encourage me. Big shout outs to Miara Shaw, Monique Walker, Jessica Lawson, Janelle Johnson, Joy Hutton, Keisha Simmons and Candace Junee with Epic Fab Girl!
