We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Ashton Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan Ashton, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My inspiration has always come from music…. When I was a little boy, I loved the Disney Channel music videos that played during the commercial breaks. I always slept with my T.V. on so I could hear when the videos came on at night, and I would jump out of bed, turn on my strobe light and pretend I had an audience to dance and sing for. I just wanted to make people proud. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become deeply inspired by entertainers like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Madonna. They have made a huge impact on my song-writing and personal style. Fashion is a very important source of inspiration for me as well.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always known that I am meant to be a musical artist – I sing, play piano, write my own music, and feel most comfortable performing for others. When I started college, I felt so lost because I was not going in the direction that I had always seen myself going. I could feel myself losing the opportunity to achieve my dream more and more each day. I knew I was at the point where I had to make a decision for my own happiness. It was then that I decided to give up my academic scholarship for business entrepreneurship and start on my own path. Needless to say, that decision was not easy to make… I knew I was risking my entire future, but I felt my mental health deteriorating. So, I left college when I was 19 years old, and shortly thereafter, signed a contract with Neal Hamil Agency as a model and actor. Almost immediately, I felt my life being steered into the right direction. I naturally began forming relationships with local designers and fashion show producers, and eventually had opportunities to work behind the scenes as well, such as casting runway shows and hiring models for local campaigns. While I am still involved in fashion, I am also working on putting out some of my own songs and eventually an entire album… just taking that one day at a time, but I promise you will hear my music soon. I just have to remember: Dreams don’t come true over night 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh goodness… I would probably start by visiting Isrel Fonseca’s atelier. He has an amazing view of Houston, and all of his designs are impeccable. Plus, we would need new outfits for the drag or burlesque show at Avant Garden later that night 😉 The next day I would probably have to pay a visit to House of Pies for a very healthy breakfast choice of cherry pie with ice cream… or maybe blueberry? OH, but the coconut meringue would also be an option, so we would just have to get all 3! Haha. Afterwards, we would have to pay a visit to Hermann Park for a little walk, plus, Hotel Zaza is right down the street so we’d have to have lunch at The Monarch… The view of the Mecom Fountain is beautiful from the patio! Next, it would definitely be necessary to stop by Leopard Lounge for some vintage finds and then run across the street to Agora for some coffee because we gotta have enough energy for clubbing in Montrose later that night! Lord knows nights like that don’t end til 4 AM… and lastly, I’m not much of a sports person myself, but it’s definitely necessary to stop by Minute Maid Park for some Astros gear because why not? Gotta support our local team!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today without the help of a few very special people who I would like to dedicate this to: Of course, my wonderful parents for teaching me everything I know and for putting up with my intense highs and lows. They are so strong.
My soul-twin, Zoë, for always believing in me and accepting me for who I am…. When I started this journey, she was the first person who walked into my life and has stayed by my side ever since. She is an angel.
I’d like to thank Shannah Quinn, the most selfless person I know, for taking me under her wing, guiding and protecting me as if I was her own, and helping me find my way when I was so lost without even knowing it.
To fashion designer Isrel Fonseca for always reminding me of my purpose and for making me feel like a star.
And last but not least, I give all credit to God for the gifts and talents I’ve been blessed with.
