We had the good fortune of connecting with June Cates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi June, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
At age 75 and being a retired fine arts artist, I wanted to get back into the art world. I made the decision to buy a 142 year old former meat market, refurbish it and open a Fine Art Gallery in our small town. Thus helping myself and other artists and helping our small town to grow.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I paint reality and scenes people can relate to. I’m self-taught and with years of learning from my mistakes, I have become the artist I have strived to be. But, I am still learning every day I put paint on canvas. I’ve spent 55 years developing my art, doing art shows and getting my art out to the public. It was not easy. It involved hard physical work setting up art shows, many hours painting and preparing for the shows. I managed the challenge by tackling it head-on and getting it done. I learned to listen to other artists and patrons as to what people want in art. And basically how to sell art. I want the world to know artists are the luckiest people in the world because we see beauty everywhere and by putting it on canvas, others can enjoy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start the day in our little town of 1200 by going to our great local coffee shop. The rest of the morning would be spent at our antique & gift shops. Lunch at one of our eateries. Later, visit the Art Galleries and tour our historic district ( the Third largest in Texas ) with its many fine old homes and end the day at our Wine tasting room.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank the artists in my gallery who trust me with the sales of their work and the wonderful customers that make our existence possible. And especially the support of our county.
