We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After years of considering opening an online store, the main questions have always been: What do people want? What do they love?

I’ve attempted starting my own clothing store twice before establishing Pic Houston. With those two attempts, my brand was always undefined and undesired.

To circle back and answer those two questions definitively, I’ve drawn focus towards my location and the people around me, Houstonians.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career started off within the graphic design field. I’ve always had a passion for designing apparel alongside other products and materials. Today I’m a professional UX/UI designer, I design extremely complicated user experiences within climate tech software.

Was it easy? F*CK NO!

Once you dedicate 14-hour workdays to earn an understanding of eCommerce, clothing manufacturing with a sustainable mindset, shipping rates by country, inventory management, pricing, size guides, item weights for packaging, product photography, marketing, customs and import taxes, processing times, returns and exchanges, payment gateways, customer support. and I’ll stop there… then it becomes easier over time.

The Pic Houston brand will grow over time. There is a story and a team to build. Many more ideas and products to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
– El Tiempo on Navigation Blvd (try their Margaritas) – At least one of the Houston Astros games at Minute Maid stadium.
– Discovery Green (just get out and walk around, you will figure the rest out)
– Saint Arnold Brewery (especially their beer garden, nice downtown view)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Two shoutouts.

1. Beardbrand. They have always stuck out of the crowd in regards to reaching their audience with a unique approach and style. They stayed focused on their community and customer support. They provided something that people can wear, experience, and love.

2. Julian Mandler, a professional designer based out of Austin, TX (originally from Germany). A friend with an imagination that goes beyond your digital screen.
