We had the good fortune of connecting with K.Starr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K.Starr, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Hmm, I would say “Just jump!” Although yes, I do feel a lot of times we overthink, and we should just jump, for me, you have to wait until you have peace about it. I always consult with God before I just jump to make sure that’s the move. That way, even though if the jump doesn’t make sense to anyone else, to you and God it does and that’s all that matters. Pray before you jump, then JUMP!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I’ve been singing since I was two years old. My mom was the director of the choir, and my dad played the keys. Music and entertaining is all that I’ve ever known and wanted to do! Many talent shows, pageants, schooling, training etc. to get to where I am now. No it definitely has not been easy, as I’m sure every artist or entertainer would tell you. Many backstabbing moments, fending for yourself, homeless days, but it’s all about your faith and how bad do you want it, right? Moments like dancing for Bobby Brown, CeCe Peniston, and Montell Jordan have all been amazing, as well as performing in various theatre shows and of course recording my own music. My most proudest moments are working on my own music related projects, because the recording studio, besides the stage, is my favorite place to be! EP coming this year by the way! 🙂 What sets me a part is my true passion for music and my distinct sound. This is not a gimmick for me, nor is any form of the arts. It’s what I really love and have studied to do my whole life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be honest, I am the worse when it comes to hosting friends coming! I literally never have any sense of direction of anywhere haha! Can’t lie, I get really caught up in wanting to be great and hustling, I can lose sense of living sometimes, but I’m working on that! lol. Google is my best friend, so before they come, I would have definitely conjured up some hiking, outside, entertainment spot, food and drink type situation. Then let’s just be big kids and play Taboo… i don’t know! haha.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout first and foremost to God who has charged me with the honor of the gifts in Music & performing of the arts that I possess! My family has been my rock from the beginning. S/o to my sister & brother, Grace & Maurice, my grandparents, aunt, and other family members, and especially my parents. They are everything. Also to my real friends, you know who you are, that really push me to greatness, and aren’t afraid to contest me. Lastly, Mariah Carey, Usher, Beyonce, and Prince, haha! Just a few artists I have always studied along the way.
