We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalynn Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalynn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I left the corporate world, I knew I was meant to do something different. I knew I was meant to follow my dreams and do everything in my power to make them come true. I had always wanted to own my own business, I just wasn’t sure what it would be until I received my yoga certification. From the day I graduated from my teacher training, I knew exactly that I wanted to bring yoga to athletes. I knew that there was a missing piece of training for athletes. I also had been to a lot of other yoga studios in Houston, that are all so wonderful, but none of them spoke specifically to me as a former athlete. And that is what I wanted to create… an environment for current and former athletes to train and practice yoga to increase their lifespan of being an athlete.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets Yoga Athletex a part from others is we include a well-rounded training facility and online platform, that encourages both hard work and recovery. We push you to your limits in our gym and then we encourage you to relax and recover so you can come back stronger the next day. We cater towards youth athletes and former adult athletes, from all sports. We genuinely care about our athletes and their goals. We love watching our athletes grow and go after their dreams. We started very small in our parents garage, offering yoga to our friends and family. We moved from the garage to the park. We opened our first brick & mortar location in 2017 and have been growing ever since. This year we added our online portal of classes, that truly sets us a part in the online fitness world. I am most excited to bring our services nationwide this year! We are working with teams and clubs and athletes across the country and it is a dream come true. We provide sport specific yoga, HIIT training, breathwork + meditations for athletes. We know what athletes need and we cater to them at different stages of their seasons. Anything that is worth it, is not easy. I have learned so much over the past 7 years and I know that with every set back and failure, is an opportunity for me to become stronger and more knowledgable. I’ve learned to stick up for myself and my business. I’ve learned that time is valuable. I’ve learned that everyone has different strengths to bring to the table. I have learned to make decisions based on our core values and vision alone and always go with my gut. I want the world to know that you can turn any hardship into something wonderful. I want the world to know that Yoga Athletex is creating and serving the athletic community, to build better, more well-rounded athletes that are physically and mentally healthy, in all that they do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Funny, my best friend from New Orleans just visited me last week! I took him to El Tiempo for fajitas, Round Top Texas for Antique Week, and Crisp in the heights for pizza + pasta. In the mornings, we went to Slowpokes for coffee + breakfast and Luce Roasters for their charcoal latte, that was so delicious! We also went to Anderson, Texas for a get away to the country, which is always so nice and relaxing. If we had more time, I would have taken him to Memorial Park for a nice 3 mile walk around the loop.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents. Both of my parents have given me the confidence and courage to go after my goals and dreams. They both take risks and have encouraged me and my sister (business partner) to do the same. We have seem their risks pay off over time and they have been nothing but inspiring to me. They are my favorite role models and supporters.
