We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Burnett Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
To be honest Id have to say making the conscious decision just to stay disciplined in the field. Everyday there is constant reason for wanting to quit but being disciplined as I am, really really helps with keeping up the momentum “success” brings.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Spicy Champloo. Champloo in Japanese means “mixture” so I slapped Spicy in front of it to resemble my imagination. You’ll understand that once you see my artwork.

Let me tell you this when it comes to creating artwork though it’s not all glitz and glamour. Im so passionate about it. Like you really have no idea. Words can’t really describe it. Would I say I’m the best artist ever? Definitely not but from where I was till now. I can definitely salute to the Growth, Trial and Errors, Falling outs, late nights in the garage, a small desk. Perseverance is key. Those days where you really don’t want to do anything just do it. You will then begin to come in light with who you are and what you will accept. All of that is what fuels my drive to passionately create art at the level in which I’m producing. Strange now I think about it…hmm.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We only got a week. Definitely spacing things out. Will do 4 major things on four days out of the week. First day is easy say they flew in mid day. We will do something light keep it at the house. Wine, card games, cooked meal. Over the course of the next few days we will have hit museums, city eats, art crawls. Those places call for great conversation and I’m a fan. If you’re a friend of mine we do mellow city vibes, a lot of sepia.

On the cool though we’d be looking forward to get out city scene and hit some trails, beaches, open world things. Haha shit if we were in Sac I have to you to this meannnn Koren bbq joint. Ohh boy lol but yeah.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ooo okay okay my biggest support on planet earth is my family. No matter what they’ have just always been there for me. Even when I was just down and out on crash dummy shit. Their faith in me definitely keeps the spirits of this journey a float. Thank y’all so much.

I read this book once called the Four Agreements. Resonated so well with me when I was in the process of healing. The one that stood out the most was, Don’t take things personally. I still to this day practice that. It’s always harder than it seems but I’ve definitely slipped up before. I’m human.

Also I can’t forget about the Spicy community they’ve been holding it down since 2014 and I love them for that. Stay up, stay fresh, stay spicy.
