We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Houston, Texas my upbringing made me. I was born in the city but was country raised. I was raised by 2 parents that loved me and showed me the meaning of hard work at early age, my uncles and aunts played a big role in my upbringing also, I spent a lot of time in the church so that kept me out of trouble.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in smoke meat catering/BBQ. I stand behind what I do. In the beginning it was rough as long as I was doing it for fun everybody was calling , when I started it as a Business meaning you have to pay nobody called lol. My brother let me cater his wedding after that it became real. I have not looked back. It was a challenge most guys can’t say they was the best man and the caterer. I have yet to have a bad review, and believe it or not I’m still learning to perfect it. Good bbq is hard to find but with KJ’’s Real Pit BBQ it’s always good.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them outside of the city and show them a different world, some country scenery where the sky is lit up with stars. My family owns a few properties of land deep in the country anyone I have ever took there has fallen in love.I prefer peace and quiet over the club scene.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I credit my success to God, without him I wouldn’t of made it this far. Growing up I watched my aunt and grandmother bbq, also want to mention my father and Godfather and my Big cousin Vernon he also inspired me by watching him. I owe my passion for cooking to my mother I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with her especially Saturday nights, Sunday dinner was a big thing after church so she would be up all night cooking. I would wash the greens and sample everything. Motivation comes from my wife, brother, and sister who pushed me to stop cooking for fun and start doing it as Business.
