We had the good fortune of connecting with Kia Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was raised in a musical home where education of all subjects was just as important as our creative classes and extracurricular activities. I’ve always loved to create and knew I would go to study some sort of design at college. I chose to study graphic design at Brigham Young University. I loved it so much! It was the perfect degree to learn how to visually communicate everything! I focused most of my time on web and app development with a few fun classes on other topics of design. Towards the end of my bachelors degree I took a textiles class and it reminded me how much I loved the hands on process that went into making the final textile product whether it was clothes, bedding, or home decor. At this time woven goods were starting to make a come back and my husband knew how much I enjoyed looking at woven wall hangings and trying to figure out how they were made, so he bought me my first loom! Weaving was a fun hobby to come home to once my work day was done at the design agency I worked at. It was nice to come home and do something creative that wasn’t looking at a screen. After a year of creating and figuring out how to weave on my own I started my business Woven by Kia. And I have been weaving for 5 years since then!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a fiber artist and focus my art on creating home decor. I pride myself on my large pieces being one of a kind. No two pieces will ever be the same. I am a self taught weaver and it is amazing to see all the resources that are more readily available now, 5 years later. My weaving is what I do in the evening when my kids are asleep or in the afternoon during naps. It’s a fun way to relax and be creative at the same time! As I create my weavings I love focusing on how different colors and textures make you feel. Every home has a different feeling, and I want to match that in the decor I create.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My friends and I would hangout in my home and let our kids play together and then once we’re able to get away we’d go and enjoy a bite from a local spot. Right now my favorite burgers are from Joy Love Burgers and El Kourmet. But I’m always down for some good bbq or a delicious salad! And then we’d definitely go get some type of dessert, whether it’s cookies from Crumbl or custard from Ritters Frozen Custard or both ice cream and cookies from SMOOSH Cookies.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband and my parents are my number one supporters and believers of my work. They were the ones who pushed me to start weaving and continue to help me grow my talents.
